are shotgun slugs legal in the uk

hi i have bean asked to shoot a buck out of a corn field to reduce damage and i dont have a fac so was wondering if slugs are legal and if so where to get some for a barreta 302 semi with half choke if thats possible

They are legal but you need an FAC certificate and apparently theyre hard to get put onto your FAC And alot of shops dont sell the slugs

in tat case then is there a shotgun cartridge that would kill a buck clean and would that be legal to do.maybe some buck shot at close range

Not 100% sure but I very much doubt it would be legal.

SSG - the size below SG. They are available, I have some. But you need to be very close to be sure. I'd also check with BASC/Defra about the conditions under which you can shoot a deer as a pest using a shotgun.

 

You can with muntjac but only if you are the landowner or his specified representative, as I understand it.

I'm sure others on the site will be better briefed and can give you more precise guidance. But do check before you shoot.

They must either be shot with a slug or AAA shot of not less than 36 grams.

 

They can be shot if they are causing damage and it is not specific to a species.

 

You must satisfy yourself that the Deer you plan to shoot is the one causing the damage, you cannot be indiscriminate.

 

Slugs you need an FAC for but AAA can be bought anywhere on an SGC.

BBs measure 4.1mm and AAAs measure 5.2mm, the mighty SG measure a whopping 8.4mm and you only get 9 in a cartridge as opposed to 38 for the AAA.

If you hit it, you could kill a Deer at 40 yards with one but this is wholly unadvisable, it will lead to wounding ONLY.

The maximum distance I would shoot a Deer with AAA would be about 20 yards, this distance would give you enough pellet strikes in the right place, a head shot would always be preferable in this situation.

I have done it once myself with AAA and it was 10-15 yards away and dropped dead to a head shot.

As close as you can and 20 yards max I would say in every situation.

Surely thats more than enough power to kill a Deer? So if you hit a deer further away in the head it would kill it outright?

But obviously it would be alot harder to hit a deer at that distance...

I'm talking about Slugs here, nothing else.

Yes I did, and they can,

 

It is more than enough power to kill a Deer at 100 but you need to hit the target which is difficult at that distance and so yes it would kill a Deer if you hit it.

 

50 yards is a capable distance, 75 is pushing it.

 

Slugs are almost impossible to get for Live shooting in this country.
