cat fish

some one i was speaking to this week reminded me of a fish caught in a local cannal to me,im not taking the preverbial but this fish was of about 6,7 oz black with a typical cat fish appearance but not the same as a wells cat has any one else ever seen or does know what it could be.oh and on picking it up in the usual manner stung me from somewhere behind the gill area.

Yes there are quite a few different species of cats out there and once introduced and used to the water they can survive for many years, but not

all cat fish will grow over the size of half a pound or sometimes even smaller (depending on specie).

 

It could be down to some idiot having bought catfish for the fishtank and it started killing other fish so was then released in the canal.

 

It wasnt Exeter canal by any chance ?

It will probably be a channel cat. I have had a great deal to do with these when i was youngster, even (to my shame) introducing them into a water teaming with small roach., They often have a spine on their dorsal fin

bloody hell looking on the cat link its got a real good chance that was it a channel cat,cheers darcy,the one i caute was in the wolverhampton area.

you know the one with the fox and anker on it at the back of the small golf course,top end of coven,thats the one mate but that fish was caught sixteen maybee seventeen years ago.
