Lilyferret 0
Again from experience i have had more problems getting jills to accept another ferret if they have spend a decent period of time alone , i dont believe if they arnt curled up together within a few hours of intros they will ever be totally happy, imo its stressfull on the anti social ferret to expect it to live with another ferret because it makes our lives easier Its certainly not good for the ferret on the receiving end off the contant attacks , so here at one point i had a block of cages all with single jills in them due to them not mixing Couldn't agree more Kay Quote Link to post
Guest jojoamojo
How can anyone say it is cruel to keep a ferret on its own ? that is like saying it is cruel to keep a dog on its own.Like Kay, I have had ferrets that wont tolerate being with another and i dont belive they are as social as some may think.Yes 2 can be better than 1 but 1 is better than none.My parents (bless them) would only let me keep 1 for many years and it did not suffer in any way.My advice get one and if ferrets are for you,you will have many in a very short time a kit on its own, going to a kid who is at school all day is cruel, it will be pulled from its litter mates and wont know whats hit it, if its a pet it should be in a pair Quote Link to post

Kay 3,709
Well surely the kids going to have a parent as back up ? the kits going to need feeding more than once a day so theres gotta be someone there to do that or is there Quote Link to post
stubby 175
at the moment I have an 8 week old jill ferret polecat, that looks more like a 5 week old, in a cage ALONE in the front room, the reason, its the runt of the litter, and was slowly getting starved out by its bigger siblings, so at the moment its being kept on its own to try to save it, so would that be classed as cruel???? you say, she has no one to help her, well she's got you aint she?, by the sounds of it, at least she has asked, if I were you, Id recomend to her to get a hob, you never know, Ive seen post's by yourself, asking for ferreting buddies, your age, we'll maybe with a bit of guidance by yourself, she could become YOUR NEW FERRETING BUDDY Quote Link to post
datawrite 0
i got 2 kits me self a jill and a hob they have just settled in and now they play fight all day and when i get up in the morning they runn to cage to get to me and when i let them out they lick me then start play nipping and then running round like headles chicken. these are my first ferrets and i couldnt imagen what one on its own would be like, just carnt wait to get them working. Kay 3,709
Well polecats are solatry aminals, people keep rabbits quinea pigs, dogs, cats, horses etc on there own why not a ferret. I wouldn't do personally. Also I wouldn't sell it to her as she is 13 she is most probably some emo kid trying to have a unusual pet and doesn't realise how long they live. I am only 13 but I do have very experienced frends and family. She doesnt know the foggiest. Well as its not totally clear if this childs going to be the sole carer for any animal i certainly wouldnt home to a child of that age period . if however her parents are involved & this isnt something that kids do , tell there mates there having a new pet & the parents know nothing about it , then i would reccomend 1 adult neutered feret who perhaps isnt happy with company , there the ones who get left behind at rescues simply because they wont mix Personally a kit going to an inexperienced 13 yr old is not the right option in my opinion Quote Link to post
lorelei0922 2
It certainly depends on the situation... a ferret to a 13 yr old at ALL!!! requires full parently co operation and consent... Hense why i'll be having a long discussion with Will's parents... i wouldn't rehome a ferret to a child unless the parents are fully on board to take up ALL care when the kid gets bored.. thats just plain facts! As for 1 or more ... i know many people who have single pet ferrets who are happy and healthy and very well loved, Granted these are indoor ferrets and i would recommend a single ferret be kept inside so that even if the kids at school there are others home for company etc. The only way for a descision like this to be made is on a case by case individual basis! Judging outright that having a single ferret is cruel is wrong. Especially when you dont have all the facts.... Quote Link to post

Judging outright that having a single ferret is cruel is wrong. Especially when you dont have all the facts.... Well i have never had a ferret throw its self in its water dish to end it all because its a lone ferret but i have had ferrets who have been so traumertised by a new animal being introduced to the fold to the point where its stopped eating & messes its self due to the attention its been given by the new animal. Probably a common occurence in multi ferret households who are constantly being added to, it took me little time to get the ballance right here simply because i wasnt prepared to mend what wasnt broken in the first place. I really feel strongly that each animal should be treated as an indervidual & i agree i dont think its cruel to keep a lone ferret Quote Link to post
sue 1
i have a jill she is 4 and she has spent the last 2 years on her own as she will not live with any other ferret Quote Link to post
Guest jojoamojo
i know some wont live wth other ferrets, all i meant is why take 1 ferret, take 2 then it has company, sounds like the kid is after a kitten to sit on her lap best tell her what ferrets are really like Quote Link to post
The one 8,489
I would never keep a ferret on there own but i only breed kitts for replacement so they would get put in with the rest of the gang when there old enough there socail animals and like company Quote Link to post
