fergie 0
I don't have one yet as the house i live in belongs to the mod but when i do build one i would put a roof on the out side run but people use wood chippings from places like b&q i don't know if the bags of bark you can get would be ok Quote Link to post
lorelei0922 2
Concrete works great... keeps them from digging out (which they would if you used grass unless you buried a mesh bottom and planted grass on top) also you can spray it down with the hose.. very easy clean up... i've got a few problems with woodchip and ferrets ... when you drop in whole prey they drag it about .. through the woodchip.. and then ingest said woodchip.. risking possible blockages... not really worth it to my mind but then lots of people have used it for AGES!! with no problems at all Quote Link to post
Rolfe 2
Im hoping to build a court sometime and was just wondering what you put on the floor of the outside run? i was thinking about grass but dont think it would be very practical to clean out so that left me thinking about wood shavings but they would just get soaked in the rain so that would be a waste of shavings so i was just wondering what you lot put down on the floor? Cheers F.k My outside court has a slabbed floor so i can hose it down and keep it clean.......the hutch/sleeping quarters have shavings which are changed regularly. Also with slabs......there is no chance of any ferrets digging under the netting and escaping. Quote Link to post
sue 1
i heard that you shouldnt use bark ,something to do with moulds growing on it when it gets damp its poisonous to the ferrets .not sure how true .my court has a concrete floor but where they do their poos i put shavings so its easier to clean up,and having a concrete floor its easy to wash out Quote Link to post

The owner wouldn't have known what it died of without the post mortem she had done. Turns out it had blocked his intestines and then perforated his gut, poor thing. needless to say, she never used them again. I don't even use cat litter due to the risk of any getting on their food. scothunter 12,609
Good point need to keep my eye on that.My jill drags the meat into the kits and shavings do get stuck to it.Never had a prob but thats not to say it couldn't happen though. Quote Link to post

And get your woodchip from them it will save you an absolute fortune. If you are going to use shavings or chippings for an outside run/court, First lay some terram/geo-tex (weed barrier) and spread your chippings on that. When it needs cleaning just pull the corners and carry it out like a bag, empty it and put it back down. Make sure it is weed barrier and not visqueen as this will just hold water and you will end up with a sopping mess. Quote Link to post
will.f11 24
I dont have a court (yet!) but in my hutch shavings are useless. I put them in the food area in the evening and when I go out in the morning then they are all gone! and the sleeping compartement is full! It is annoying but she has stopped a bit now. I think it may have been something to do with the kits and nest building. but she used loads! Quote Link to post
