late night at the new shoot

Recommended Posts

me and hodge went to the new permission last night, but prior to that we went to one of our other permissions for a quick mooch and a zeroing session. got zeroed in at 35 yards, getting good 1/2" groups.....so that was it ready to go.

walked along the river in to the bottom fields, saw a couple of hares and that was about it....but it was a lovely night, so just nice to out really.

we where walking a long a hedgerow and about 3 yds in front of us two little rabbits scampered off......they where that small and the grass that long we just didn't see them !!!!!!!!

wandered round for another 20 mins or so...........nothing about.

oh well we'll go to bob's (new permission) and see whats happening up there.

now.......we'd had a quick look round on sunday in the wind and rain.......found a couple of reasonable places to lie in wait......so we headed for them. well........ i say headed, more like battled!!

we didn't want to disturb any rabbits that may of been out so we came into the back of the land over the old railway embankment, which is part of the permission.........and to say it was overgrown was an understatement........a machette would of been very welcome....anyway after being nettled and scratched we made our way down off the embankment, through the underpass towards the rabbit infested field.

walking in steadily under the cover of the hedge........we could not beleive our eyes!!!!!!!

the small square feild adjacent to bobs veg garden, which is just under an acre, was heaving with rabbits .i can honestly say that ive never seen so many in one place at one time...... ever

theres no stock in bobs field, but, the grass, in the whole field is so well grazed that it looks like its been mown..............well it has........by rabbits.

there was about 60 rabbits of various sizes.......all this in less than an acre.

anyway........settled in behind some long nettles and we took one a piece from there.

only problem was...........every single rabbit ran for cover.........into the heavily overgrown embankment. we collected our first 2 and moved to the other end of the field........took cover in some long grass and waited. after about 20 mins...........around 10 rabbits came out.

4 shots , in 30 secs, 4 more for the bag, they didnt all run for cover this time..........another couple of shots, another couple of rabbits. as we where collecting them a small rabbit was sat abot 15 yds away looking right at us.............hodge shouldered the rapid.....and the bunny did a double back flip, worthy of a place in the british gymnastics team.

waited for another 20 mins or so........not a sausage, so we took the smallest, most recent rabbit to the workshop, gutted it, skinned it.......fried it up on a little camping stove, made brew and had supper.

and damn good it was to. by this time it was getting dark, so put the lamp on and went for another session. there was loads out again by this time........but the little buggers spook easy!!!!!! again they all ran for cover to the embankment. with the red filter on scanning through the undergrowth....picking up their eyes............it was like a set of red fairy lights in the bushes, waited again only a handfull came back out and we added another 2 to the bag. total for the night 11............not a massive bag considering the rabbit population.....not as easy as we thought it would be, but that suits us fine... we like a challenge.....looking forward to next time and i think supper on site with a fresh rabbit is going to become a habit..................a rabbit habit!!!!

by this time it was midnight....................time for bed!!!!!

thanks for reading enjoy the pictures.

all the best

HAHA Sean you need to stop write so damn much, mind you i have never seen so many rabbits in one place it was like there was wave after wave of them running for burrows it was immense, but how wary were they the slightest movement and they were gone.

Still supper stop was a good way to leave them to come wondering out again, and how short was that grass it looked liked it had been mown, we defo need to help Bob protect his Veggie plot the little buggers are running wild.
