Kane 2 Posted January 25, 2006 Report Share Posted January 25, 2006 No dicky, just gave my opinion like everybody else Im sure someone with have taken fallow with this cross, but if I was running the gauntlet of scaling the walls of Anwick park to nabe a fallow, I wouldnt be taking a saluki first cross with me. A fallow buck is one hell of a strong beast With some saluki/greyhounds topping the 28inch mark and with the right attitude why not? Quote Link to post

LEG ANYWHERE AND BULLYING THEM DOWN BY SHEER STRENGTH AND POWER.. NO THROAT HOLDS ETC FOR HIM..HE HAS ONLY REALLY RAN ROES IN SMALL FIELDS AND WOODS AND ALTHOUGH MISSING A FEW SITTERS HAS ALSO TAKEN SOME CRACKERS ON LONG SLIPS... BUT I AM POSITIVE HE WOULD BE NO USE WHATSOEVER ON A LARGE FALLOW BUCK DUE TO HIS TECHNIQUE OR LACK OF... THINK CAREFULLY POCKTS AS YOU MAY BE REDUCED TO A RUNNING BATTLE SCENARIO WHICH IS NOT THE IDEAL SCHEME TO BE HONEST IS IT MATE.. lampinglurcher 36 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Share Posted August 7, 2006 there is a dog purpose bred for this quarry....try the scottish deerhound!! if the deer gets a good start on your saluki/grey, even that wont have the stamina of a good deer, saluki/grey will quit if it gets a good kick in the face. a deerhound or deerhound x is the ideal dog - size, strength, stamina, guts and determination. you cant argue with centuries of dedicated purpopsefull breeding!! matt Quote Link to post

TOMO 26,963 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Share Posted August 7, 2006 ok i will add my bit, and this is not an opinion its FACT had a bitsa lurcher a few years back that had amongst other things in its make up saluki, colie, and wolfhound, she stood 23 ins and wieghed 44lb and this little bitch took fallow doe's on her own, FACT. i have no pics of this so, you will have to take my word for it . at this time i was doing a fair bit on these big fellas, :ph34r: and also had mates who owned little dogs that took them . having just said this i will also say that some times she would get dragged about a bit and it was obvious that a bigger dog would do a cleaner job on some of the doe's she took. but dont think for a miniuet thats its not posible it is. the size of the dog in the fight and all that :showoff: TOMO Quote Link to post

There's some lads on here that used to take good numbers and I don't think any of them had deerhounds. In fact, most of them had a dash of saluki in their crosses if I remember rightly. I love deerhound crosses (Baldie's lad is a belter) but there is no mileage in saying this dog in its pure form is better than saluki crosses for fallow etc. I think there was a lot more lads pre ban running the deer with saluki composites than deerhounds, so the comparison is flawed. They are very different dogs and the numbers on the ground might have something to do with the lack of lads running them. But it might also have something to do with the lads wanting something tried and tested, good at other game (hares, bunnies etc) as well as the stock being accessible. Quote Link to post
