" It's called moving with the times. "

I call it 'Rattle their cage of self righteousness and watch them all explode into hysteria!' :clapper: Works every time. Funny, isn't it? Fly short or broadwings. Dig to, run, snare or shoot a fox. Fish or Clay Bust. Whatever. That's all " Each to his own, mate! Good luck to yerr! :good: "

But have the temerity to suggest a f*cking rabbit can be caught without the aid of mickey soft type electronics and ooooohh! Don't the cats come out to hiss and scratch!

You might get some high and mighty old dinosaurs dismissing their use but what they did in the olden days and now 20 years on since they last ferreted a rabbit are a world apart.

I can't wait to read my Biography, dimples! When Are ye going to write it ~ from ye encyclopaedic knowledge of my life and times? :) Only may I suggest ye run it past Me first? So I might correct ye chronology? I was There, sunshine ;)

And what, pray, is the difference between the rabbit and its habits of today and twenty years ago? That should make almost as enlightening a read as ye forthcoming book. Only, what we did " in the olden days " was catch rabbits. I fail to see why such methods as we used then should fail to work with todays rabbits. In fact, the only reason I see for you lot being so 'High and Mightily' down on " Ferreting " is because its very mention demonstrates the chasm between that and the modern practice of " Rabbit Digging ".

Was it Orwell who said something about; " He who can 'control' history can control the future. " What in interesting caricature that evokes; Legions of jack booted Super Race members, Goose Stepping over burys, spades sloped on their shoulders and little boxes held out and aloft before them. Humming, " The Future Belongs To Me! "

we take a few rabbits each season with ferrets and in my opinion now a days every responsible ferret user should have at least one box and collar years ago you listened to radios for your entertainment now you all use tellevisions, except maybe you ditch shitter, its called moving with the times and if you want to sit for hours out side a rabbit hole in january in -6 just use the old style after a few sessions like that you may think differently ferrets do kill and at SOME time be trapped and all the waiting in the world wont get him out :wallbash:

Woodga; Does My not owning a television, radio or knocker box effect You though??? Why Should anyone else feel obliged to march to Your drum? Again I ask; Where does all this spirit of Live and Let Live go, the moment it's suggested that rabbit digging isn't the only way?

Sitting for hours outside a rabbit hole? Do ye know I haven't because ye've been given a peek at the manuscript of my up and coming Biography? If so, bravo, Gnips; That bit's right! I haven't 'sat for hours'. Simply never needed to. Never had a ferret that gave me cause to. Never had one become trapped either - not making them wear collars probably helped there? Nothing to snag, see?

Anyway, I've enjoyed this enlightening little read about myself. Thank you for the input, chaps. I surely now know myself that bit better than all those years of experience inside my skin. Now, just for a Real laugh; Any of you Northerners fancy a trip south? Run ye finger along a map of the south coast till ye find something called The South Downs. Little geological thing formed by the sea, just a bit before even my time. We locals used to call it " Chalk ". And it bears a nice, thick, total layer of " Flint ".

So, why don't you lot get a little coach trip together and take ye spades, little boxes and ye ferrets down there. Pop ye ferrets in. March around a bit. Then just strike that green sward with ye spade  Then we'll see what could keep a man Hours at one bury. And I'm sure even our Woodga there wouldn't stay cold for long ;)

having a collar on a ferret doesn't automatically turn you into a ferreter who is obsessed with stomping around with your little orange box in your hand, it doesnt stop you from using field craft or knowledge gained over the years, it just gives you a back up or a bit of piece of mind if it all goes tits up... you can still catch rabbits in the same manners as the guys who did it before us using the same techniques and field craft as they did, that little gizmo on your ferrets collar shouldn't change that, they are'nt expensive when put into context with the money you'll spend on your other ferreting gear, so theres no reason not to, aslong as you dont rely on it...

Last season I had a lay up I waited a while and nothing happened so with my orange box in hand I located the ferret then dug the two foot down to her where I found her she'd killed but in the process the rabbit must've been kicking about and collapsed the only tube into the stopend where they were. Without my locator on that day my ferret who I reared, handled, fed and sheltered over the last three years would've died a long slow death in that underground tube so I thank technology for that and so does my ferret :clapper: the kits there to make things better these days so for a few poxy quid it's worth it in my oppinion
