I have a couple of Jacks and they are looking good. They are almost a year old and they are showing good promise. We have quite a few foxes here, but so far as yet I cannot entice the dogs to enter a den. Hopefully they will get braver as they get a little older??? I wouldn't mind some helpful suggestions from anyone who has experience with these dogs.

As a side note, I am down south at the moment visiting relatives on their farm, and just Thursday the children came running in yelling that they found a rat. I got my little terriers out and two of them paid little attention. But my one bitch, Bint, a ten month old short-legged JRT, jumped right in. We moved some garbage and some wood around and the little bitch caught a big male, plus five other rats and found two nests. Needless to say, I was quite happy with her.

This same little girl has learned to catch the little hedge bunnies that run free here. They were originally domestic rabbits that run wild, so they are not really fast, but neither is my JRT. I have a small video clip of the catch, but I am unsure as to whether or not to try and post it. Does this site support video clips? It is legal here to hunt rabbits, hare, foxes, coyote, rats and other vermin, even without a hunting license (the area is over run).

I would wait atleast untill your dogs are 1 year old, before I send them into a fox's den. All dogs are individuals, but a fox can scare a young dog so much that it wont go into a den later.

Train your dogs on rats and other small vermins and go for the fox den later

Thanks for the advice.

Realising that each dog is different, around what age should I start them on foxes? Will they show signs that they are ready?

All opinions welcome!!

Leave a pup be a pup and if you have dogs that will be self entering dogs thats more luck on your side but they need to go out on a few digs to get into the swing of things of course when older...Get out to a spot with a bit of cover over run with rabbits and see if they will use there nose and they can do cover at this age because them pet rabbits ar no good chalenge for a terrier as you said yourself they dont run as there pets or once where the wild rabbits wont stand around waiting to be caught.

Hey Terrier Man, thanks for the info. What age do you suggest?

As for the rabbits, I was just happy that these dogs started to show some interest already. The real test will come when we get back home, though I seriously doubt that they will be able to catch the hares up north.

Is yours a long legged or short JRT?

Hey JRT,

Nice dog! Do you get the chance to work him much? I am still interested in finding out what age that I can expect that my JRT's will start showing interest in foxes, and what age that I should let them take on such quarry? Can you give me an idea???

...

Hey, just found the answer on the "age to enter" post
