Valuing my MTC Viper 4-16x50 scope

Hi folks,

Just wondering what would be a fair asking price for my MTC Viper 4-16x50 scope should I decide to sell. I believe I bought this scope around March 2007, going from memory. It's been on my old Tikka T3 .223 and my Sako Quad .22lr, making it a working scope. Shot plenty of vermin and foxes with it. It's never been intentionally forced or abused. It does however have some slight useage marks, none major from my point of view (which may differ from others) which you can see in the photos below. All aspects of the scope are in working order  There are no marks on the lenses, there were three specs of dust on the lens when I took the photos  These brushed off. What else, it comes with the original mounts which were never used, three allen keys and an extra screw, large parallax wheel, cleaning cloth, user manual, flip up metal lens covers, sunshade, and two metal thingamabobs that I have no idea what they are :icon_redface: Also the original box and packing.

I'd just like to see what various opinions say, as I say it's in good nick in my opinion. I have not used it since I got my Leupold, but I'd also be happy to let it sit in the gunsafe as backup incase anything happens to my other scopes. So minus postage, what do you think is a fair asking price?

I've got a price in mind  I have promised to bring it for a guy to see on the weekend. Now, as far as I know all he's wanting to do is look through my scopes to get an idea of what's available out there which I'm more than happy to let him do, as we know it's a minefield out there! Anyhow, if he decies to go for something different I'll post it for sale on Monday in a seperate topic

Hi John

Would just like to ask why you bought a Leupold to replace MTC was it not good enough for what you wanted? and how good is the Leupold as it is in a different price bracket.

Many Thanks

It wouldn't really be correct to say I bought the Leupold to replace the MTC. My decision to purchase a Leupold actually had nothing to do with the Viper at all. I had a specific purpose in mind for the Leupold, I had also been considering buying another rifle, thirdly I had also over the past number of years heard people talk a lot about Leupolds and it was part curiousity made me get one.

Now, it happens I have changed my mind on both counts, so I have four scopes and two rifles :icon_eek: My other scope a Simmons Blazer 3-9x50 isn't worth selling really, so the natural conclusion is to sell the Viper. As I say above I don't have a need to sell it and I'd still be quite happy for it to sit in my gunsafe should I not get the price I have in mind for it.

To directly answer your question it's plenty good for what I did use it for, on both my .22lr and .223, for the money I paid for it. The only quibble I would have with it is it's low light performance, by that I mean dawn and dusk shooting, then again I am used to a Nightforce so, one cost me €350 the other €1,700 can't expect them to be the same. I shot a lot of foxes, rabbits, greycrows and magpies with this scope  I find the reticle good and uncluttered to my eyes, I stress to my eyes as scope choice is a personal decision, and reticle choice even more so.

I really like the Leupold, I'm impressed by it. I do think it's a better scope. Though I have not yet used it low light or shooting under the lamp. I've just been too busy to get out doing that sort of shooting lately. I don't think I can give a more honest opinion than that really.

Many thanks John for your view. Yes sometimes we expect alot out of cheaper things and end up a bit dissapointed. As you said a bit unfair to compare to your nightforce. On the advice of Jamie g going to look at Bushnell and compare that to Leupold. Mr Logic has had 2 faulty MTC scopes so that has put me off a bit and the Hawke scope I have at the moment is also faulty and is going back to get fixed. So going to spend more money this time and hope to buy the right thing, but it's a mine field out there so taking my time.

Many thanks again

update on my second one, Gary from MTC phoned me and said he'd tested and could find no fault, I will try different mounts on my 223 and see. Will report back.

But the first was definitely faulty, and faulty or not, I've had grief with it...

i like the mtc scopes not just because i sort of no gary c i no him but not that well. i no loads of people that have mtc scopes and havent had any problems with them. there after service is top stuff and i would say one of the best in the uk.

the reason for this is gary and sammy his wife are shooters themself not just some big wig that wants to get really rich like some of these firms today.

that saying with every company you get some things go wrong but i guess yours was just a bad batch mr logic

if gary said the scope was of but your not happy as for a new one im sure he will sort you out.

thing i like about gary is he can seam harsh  but he is honest and gets things sorted

Fastrac10 if its for hmr a mtc 4x16x50 is more then you need in i think mate.

if you want the bushnell then get that i set my 22/250 up tonight and i tell you what that bushnell is so so clear.

even my mate i go with said its super clear and he has a £1200 pounds swaro scope so the bushnell must be good :whistling:

Your very right that a 4-16X50 is more than enough for the HMR. That's why I'm going to take a good look at the Bushnell 6500 2.5-16X50 that at the moment is what's getting my vote. It's supposed to have a good field of view as well. Ive got a Swaro scope on my Sako75 .243 and it is magic. If I had the money would put one on HMR but not got that kind of money to spend just now. It sounds like the Bushnell will give good performance for a fraction of cost - winner in my book. Going to Scottish game fair next weekend and hope to get a look at a few scopes to compare. With a bit of luck they might have a bit extra off with a show deal! Will keep you posted.

Many thanks again
