Greyhound is the fastest over shorter distances nov, anything up to 1000 yards, theyve been bred selectivly for thousands of years.

The lurcher is part greyhound for this very reason and imo without them we would have very limited options to what our favoured lurcher cross would be.

Cheers Trev, can I ask how far behind a whippet is to a greyhound over short distances?

Its not a question i can answer fairly nov as i honestly dont know, however i will hazard a guess and perhaps stand to be corrected.

I would say up to 75/100 yards a whippet might hold their own with a greyhound but anything after that and they would be left standing imo, this would be on a straight to nov, no bends.

Any particular reason for your question????

JMO :) breeds in the order of fastest at that distance, starting with the fastest at the shortest distance, with the distance getting longer Whippet, Greyhound, with maybe Borzois i here their fast, maybe badger or Rey can tell us. then Salukis. Then you have the breeds that are slower than any of the others at any distance,Deerhound, I wolfhound.

I was heavily involved in whippet racing in the heydays of the 60s and 70s. The old adadge was "a bad greyhound will allways beat a good whippet" and I never saw anything to disproove that, over any distance from 100yds to 240yds. Pedigree whippets invariably sat off the top handicap mark and whippet/greyhound hybrids off the lower marks. In "no limit" scratch racing, greyhounds would normally win, in "under 21" scratch racing it would be 1st cross whippet/greyhounds. In my opinion, the greyhound is the fastest breed of dog by far. The saluki has better staying power but cannot match the greyhound for speed.

Cheers.

What is the fastest breed of dog? I want all aspects, like fastest out of the traps, fastest over long distance, short distance, ect.

Ta for your coming input.

Almost impossible question Nov, over 5 miles the anwsers would probably be a fellhound or foxhound over 30 yards probably a whippet. Over anything up to 3/4 mile a greyhound would be out front, beyond that, from my knowledge as you get to a mile and a half, I would say borzoi, then deerhound then saluki. A fit borzoi isnt much slower than a greyhound and is significantly faster than a deerhound or saluki. I would guess that the wolfhound would be a long way behind bringing up the rear but there are lots of things like afghan's and Ibizan's which I have never seen run so I couldn't place them, although I know that there are tracks in the USA where Afghans and similar things have run under the stopwatch so a bit of googling might get you the answer.
