whin 463
takeing the odd deer is no problem mate takeing hundreds cleanly in between running hares the odd fox maybe a days rabbiting takes a good animal , ive got whippet greyhound she can take them but she wouldnt last a hard nite twice or thrice a week , but for one or two burls a nite perfect a few good courses at hares perfect but after a few seasons the feet get feched or stoppers , if you do it for wages you soon get selective about your dogs ass enders no good , most dogs that are fast will kill aroe or grab one , but its how they do it as in trip throat etc or shoulder it then down , the only dogs to last me were the odd collie cross and good bred saluk crosses the rest would blow up after a big nite there will be good dogs out with them who can do it but for how long 4 seasons and mines were feched fit for rabbitiing which is no great shame and the odd good nite thye start picking there runs etc you get fech all for a fox money food wize you cant sell his skin can you but a cleanly killed beastie you can get 40 to 50 quid , i like catching foxes but prefer the terreie bolting to lurchers great sport , but thats that , any way its not just about the catch feild craft , knowledge whose about etc as its not all plain sailing cheers Quote Link to post
Guest lurcherboy2008
Why do people make a big thing of lurchers taking Roe? Roe are f**k all for an average lurcher never mind a decent one. Dogs don't have to be game to take them. A lot of substandard dogs will take Roe but wouldn't agree to a fox clamped on their noses. Even big slips just need a fast dog not a game one. The whippet lurchers I kept years ago would tackle Roe without hesitation. thats right mate iv seen a few dogs pull a deer theyre feckall iv also seen the same dogs running by the side of a fox staring at it picking at it but pulla deer no probs, theyre not with us now though theyre long gone and in someone elses hands Quote Link to post

blacktabs 3
Weve always kept allround dogs daytime coursed first then on to ferreting and the lamp not many roe round us preban so fallow was the deer of choice and not many types made the grade singlehanded on fallow. Yearling bucks and does are easy prey but their larger familly members at full maturity take a hard type of a dog weve always kept lurcher to lurcher types from old lines and find they suit well having enough speed and plenty of brainpower to do all thats required in the field. Guest world.hunters
My dog is a 1/4 Collie 3/4 Greyhound and is worked on all quarry. from the day i could have him out i had out with my air rifle retireving shot quarry and doing basic training and some hand signals. entered into the ferret game at and early age and then when i thought he was mentally ready for it gave him a couple runs a few times a week on some easy squatters and then entered to other game when i saw fit.
