Depends on the rateing of the rod, I use a ten foot rod, its rated for a 10 line, I have seen Pike caught on lighter rods, but the fight takes it toll on the fish after awhile, so a stronger rod will be the proper job..

I use different size hooks when tying the flies. The ones in the picture were tied on 2/0 sea hooks.

my rod is rated 5/6 so may be too lite i cant use a longer rod as im only 5ft tall! 10ft and my casts go to pot.

Could you use a salmon double hook maybe? or is a tough 2/0 needed

On some of the bigger flies that I tie I would use a flying treble, so the answer to your question is yes to the salmon hook.

My mate once use 5/6 rod, but got into trouble when a high double took the fly. You can get a nine foot rod rated for a 8/9/line.

Very good, you should ask Mackem all about, it I heard he had 43 once on the lunchen meat fly at night. :whistling:

No really I meant "nice" I think it is great to catch any fish on a fly, its a real full on battle, real in intemate like. I fished recently for big carp, proper explosive on virgin waters, burned my palm on a screaming reel, Feck :icon_eek: .

How very dare you  HG,I once cast a fly for a type of snow trout in the indian Himalayas, caught nowt all morning till I adopted the locals methods and started ripping them out of the pools with a bloody big treble  But that was for an evening meal, necessity is the mother of invention I guess  being there, surrounded with beauty and enjoying your day?I would rather be there, surrounded by fish, and enjoy my night

No offence HG
