Charles Dickens mentions the place in "Oliver Tiwst" as does Jerome.K.Jerome in "Three men and a boat",Its mentioned in the Domesday book as having 5 Ploughs and rendering £6 a year,Diana Dors and Adam Faith lived here,I saw Hugh Grant in the local bakers once, theres a sky TV news-reader lives a few streets away, not that thats indicative of anything.Hampton Court Palace is a stones-throw away,Windsor castle isnt so far, lots of local history really, and as the village is on the Thames I take the kids to see the swan-upping every July :victory: I didnt even want to live here actually,I wanted Milton Keynes

I'm originally from a town called Pembroke, about 10 miles away. Henry VII was born in the castle there, and later on, during the civil war, Oliver Cromwell himself came to oversee the siege of the castle, because it could not be breached. They only managed to get the castle to surrender when they found the secret conduit pipe that was bringing fresh water in, and cut it off.

When they finally surrendered, Cromwell ordered the main gates blown apart, because he was p*ssed off that he couldn't take the castle by force.

in my town we reportedly have the oldest pup in the country and just up the road from me was where the last bear was killed, but never ask a forester who killed it, as they can get quite pissy.

Sean , feel you have missed a couple of important points about your area.

1: Home of the Cartmell Sticky Toffee Pudding- Surely the best low fat desert in existance?????

2: Home of the best pub in world(well 15 years ago) The Engine Inn, at Cark In Cartmell. Purveyor (then) of the finest pint of Theaksons in the land. ALso home of a Sexy Barmaid called*******. Wont mention her name, had a thing with her 15 years ago, (You might of married her since then :icon_redface: )

See we all see the world from different perpectives. Mines beer, food and women :whistling:

Matt
