Recommended Posts

hi everyone got a bullx pup 10 months old now.my first lurcher was just wondering if you have any advice on the best way to get them going. Is it best to start with another dog that is doing the business or on there own. Any suggestions or if anybody in the worcestershire area wouldnt mind taking me out would realy be appreciated.

Just my opinion but maybe the dog is a bit young yet, you might be better off putting more training into your dog before you consider running him on anything. :icon_eek:

Sensible post. At 10 months your dog is still growing. It might be worth taking him out with somebody else & their dog, and keeping him on a leash, just so he can get an idea. Also, let him have a rag on some already dispatched quarry.

Just be careful that the other dog(s) you take your pup out with dont have any bad habits, personally i would keep the training up and walk him where there are a lot of rabbits, he will soon pick it up, pulling to catch, it will be in him mate, but dont overmatch him, as he will lose heart. My 2 are 14 months approx. and only one works at the minute, the other hasnt seemed ready, till yesterday that is, he got his first, and beleive me im in no hurry. Seen too many jibbed dogs by nobheads too eager, and knackered bodys that didnt have time to grow.

yeah i see what your saying ripstop think il keep up the training and walking and see if i can get him going that way. Maybe he might just stumble on the right rabbit that way and he will be off.i dont realy want to start running him properly yet for at least another few months.

as someone mentioned walk the pup in a place where it's seeing plenty of scuts........let them chase...grow....find their footing, all the time drilling in the basic commands...recall and retrieiving..............

nothing wrong with letting the pup see how experienced dogs work..(now and then)....but keep them on the lead................

I like back end of summer for pups development when mixy hits..........and they can get numerous easy squatters and short runners.......

Easy catches will help them not to get too fustrated and start sounding......

All in good time...........you'll see the pieces start to come together.................to much too young will guarantee you a one way ticket to the dog santuary............................
