Day well spent

Recommended Posts

Finally got my backside into gear today and made a good start to adding to my cage trap collection.

I have been needing to get a rabbit cage trap or two for a while but as per normal the funds have had to be spent elsewhere.

My local wireworkers manufacture and supply various cage traps and accessories to a leading uk pest control wholesaler. Although i can buy the cage traps cheaper from the wireworkers it isnt as much fun as tinkering around yourself.

So for a little less than a single cage would have cost me, I have made two and have enough mesh left to make a squirrel/rat cage trap.

I know the build quality is as nowhere near to the standard of a bought one and obviously not plate finnished, But the results will hopefully be the same.

The spring for the door action is from an old duffus, It also has a drop plate on the door bottom to stop the door being forced back.

As you say my be not up to plate finish but a quaility looking trap all the same wish you lived nearer could make me a charlie trap any day .

happy hunting .

Being the skip rat that i am i came across a couple of old dog cages that were perfect for modifying into a pigeon trap.

nice, where did u get the clips and tool from to hold the trap together ? If you don't mind me asking

The clips are from the wireworkers, handy little things.

They cost a few pence each and the crimping tool is about a tenner

Made a bloody good job of those mate - nice one

Cheers john.

I aint finnished yet. I plan to do a few more and maybe some other different types, all when i get the time.

Need to test what i have made so far and make sure that there arent any problems.

would the silver things you have used to join the wire together be strong enough for a fox trap?

I am sure they would but i would use plenty and perhaps some high tensile wire just to be sure, bit belt and braces i know. So in that respect some may argue that an alternative method may be viable.

Needless to say my mate puts his staffys in a wire dog cage and the cage is only bound togeather using these clips. The dogs have tested it to destruction and it was the front pannel of the cage that was the weakest, secured only by folded wire not the clips.

The thing is if you were to use these on a fox cage and old charlie found a weakspot, squeezed through got stuck and died, it would be down to you for causing unnecessary suffering and you would be liable.

Hope this answers your question
