Is a really good dog, really good?

Recommended Posts

I would like to think so until speaking to a friend of mine some while ago. He said he'd been out with a couple of guys, one of which had two bitches. Both ran quite poorly on the old big ears, but he thought oh well, all dogs have their off days. Second time out with the same pair of bitches, much the same and the guy who owned them threatened all sorts with regards to them staying in his possession. However, on a third occassion both bitches were awesome, the one taking 5 out of 5 and you'd have matched her to any dog in the country. Later, through another source we found out the guy had been dosing the bitches with horse steroids prior to the third occassion. So now I ask myself, when is a dog a really good dog?

:11: Sorry mate but a few dose's of horse steroids :11: aren't gonna give a dog strike, stamina, speed, drive and determination. In my opinion a good dog is a really good dog when it has the above qualties and dosing a dog with horse steriods isn't going to give you this.

Just my opinion

What was the ground like the first two times , some dogs cant cope with the heavy going , how close was the 1st time to the 3rd time , the dogs might not of been very fit the first two times???????

you would have to no the answer to the Q above to give any sort of answer ????

Before we continue don't get me wrong, I totally disagree with giving dogs steroids for the reason of improving their performance. If a dog is good and is fit then appreciate it for what it really is. As to whether steroids are a performance enhancer then ask 'Ben Johnson' !!!!

The ground was similar all three times cereal fields with new growth lots of clay 'clingy' if you know what I mean, I know, I had been there in between two of the occassions. It was November time and both dogs had been out 'reportedly' Robbie, and two bitches on two different occassions performing similarly, 'average I mean, they did catch' I was told. As to where it was then within 50 miles of the big white horse.

I agree Shaun, their coursing life would be reduced and I also agree that a good dog is one that has done it time and time again over many seasons.

Just annoyed me as I like to think that when I see a good dog run 'wish I had one' that, thats what I was appreciating at the time. Doesn't have to be my dog.

as robbie says the dogs could have been waiting for softer ground, ive got a dog here would run better on bottemless ground, if any one follows horse racing will understand this , any dog with a round action will run better on soft to heavy ground compared to a fast action dog that will struggle on it ,

Its hard to say why there was such a change in performance , hares that dont get run much are easy prey for a dog that has been running good hares ...

It could have alot to do with the land , cover etc

Wane common had a bitch called Fettle this bitch used to run shit , hity missy , then she would hit her peak and was devastating , she wold last about 8 to 10 weeks then she was finished ..

Some bitches take some time to get over a season , and a week can make all the differanc it could be that ..

A GOOD DOG/BITCH IS ONE THAT DOES THE JOB WEEK IN WEEK OUT. SOME DOGS PREFER CERTAIN GROUND TO OTHERS. A DECENT DOG SHOULD RUN WELL ON VARIED GROUND THROUGH OUT THE SEASON. ANY DOG THAT IS KILLING GOOD HARES THAT KNOWS WHAT A DOG IS AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR IS ONE TO BE CALLING "GOOD"

ive heard of these brilliant dogs over this last 3yrs baz when the ground has been firm and then you got one day of heavy ground in 2 months , but this year when its heavy you dont here from them esp when its heavy over a month or so . they have had it good these so called :super dogs: over the last 2 seasons running soft hares, i can take these dogs out tommorrow around a few places and they would struggle to get anything, this time of year on this ground.

invitation to anyone who can prove differently to this

beleive it or not i used to go coursing with a chap who's dog would not run in the rain! He has since dispenced of this bloodline and now has charlie/foxy bred dogs and i beleive he is having an excellent season so far. The main problem is finding good running sopts he tells me. :good:

robbie i only have the one dog at the mo, he,s 4 1/2 and he,s never let me down yet. he,s been a great dog to keep, can run him any where and always makes me proud. :D the dog "buddy" was owned by mate john. it was a phsyco. tidy dog. he put it to the mother of my dog and produced decent dogs. i lost mine down the fens just before xmas.
