Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Tried a favourite location yesterday evening where i now have the ajoining farm too.Spotted a buck as soon as i got into the first field but he was already running ,possibly chasing another buck as i could see a deer over the hedge .its amazing how they know their enviroment .Anyway ,onwards it was along the top of a ridge stopping to spie the fields below .Spotted a buck in the bottem field about 500-600yds away and planned my stalk .All the gates are open now so that was easier and i soon got within 2 fields away and had another look through the bins .He was nothing special ,an average young buck .Just crept through a gateway to see a doe staring at me from no more than 20 yds away .We stared at each other for an age before a wren started its alarm call behind me and that triggered her own reaction. She stamped and barked her way out the field ,barking way across the next two fields as well .I thought this had probably spoilt the rest of my stalk but decided to give it a few minutes before trying anyway .Got to the next gateway and sure enough my buck was on the alert head up ,eyes fixed on the doe above us and about 200 yds ,too far for a head shot by me anyway .Slowly got into the long grass and began a wet ,tiring creep towards him .He heard the bipod come down at about 140 yds and fixed his stare at my direction and never moved .I ouldnt see a target through the scope ,only grss and antler so i had to get closer .Luckily the doe started up again and he looked towards her .This gave me time to get somewhere i could see more .Edged side ways to a patch of shorter grass and forward slightly and looked again .The target head was in veiw so i set myslf up for the shot left handed .Down he went with a loud smack and on inspection it was seen that the shot had entered the front of the head and exited at the top ,taking off one of the antlers ! Well pleased with the stalk and shot .Now began the long tiring slog back to the truck of nearly a mile i expect .Got to the truck just on dark, tired but happy . FJager 0
Top class stuff mate, good to see you using the head shot, you are obviously confident in your skills. I shot this red on some new land, i was a bit dissapointed in myself for taking him as I wasa only after some venison, it was on last light and I couldn't see his little antlers, the owners want everything in the plantation shot though.
