I remember selling petrol (4*) at 35.5 pence per GALLON!!! You could not get £2 worth in a Mini unless it was running on fumes.

Also, still on motoring memories, does anyone (except this old git) remember the two-stroke engined cars? They were all different, but fuelled the same way. (A pint of sae 30 in the tank followed by four gallons of 2*. Most common was the Saab, then Wartberg, then DKW, now part of Audi.

and NSU if i remember rightly????....didn't they have a touch clutch on top of the gear stick aswell?

You are right Sean, I had forgotten the NSU. I can remember the "button on the gear lever" to work the clutch too, but I think it was on the wankel (careful) engined NSU RO80 only, but could be wrong.(They used oil like a two stroke anyway).

Tomo, yes you are right about there being 3* and 4* fuel, there was also 5* for very high compression engines. Think that went in the late 70's?

All these fuels were leaded of course. Premium unleaded is about 95 octane, similar to 3*, and Super unleaded between 97 and 99 like the old 4*.

woh thats a new style one lol

ours was different, made with a long piece of wood and two pegs, it fired elastic bands with the metal spring out of the one peg attached to it,

the other peg fixed to the one end to clasp the spring and a nail in the far end with the elastic stretched between the two, here is a basic pic of it,

boy they used to sting with a direct hit
