The fact you spent 2 hours looking for the jay would have kept rats away.

Your ferrets will be fine.

But why did you spend 2 hours looking for a bird to feed to ferrets, I thought you were going to say it was to be mounted. A lovely bird mounted.

i shot it for its blue feathers for tying fishing flies.

and i also love to shoot things that are allowed to be shot. accept for hares its pointless shooting them.

after i took its feathers then i thought i would give it to the ferret.

you really have to worry about "rats piss" rather than just a rat, if a rat had pee'd on the jay, you would have smelt it

so with in reason i can give my ferrets anything i shoot?

depends on "your reasons"

out of interest, where did you shoot the jay/location

and for what reason?

lots of people think that because cetain species are on the vermin list, that they can automatically go out and shoot them,

i shot it over at the farm where i help do the game keeping.

and shot it for the blue wing feathers, which i use for tying fishing flies.

in the fishing shops jay wings cost a fortune.

about the leptospirosis i dont know if they can catch it but i kow folk who have had ferrets on rats and theyve never had anything wrong with them, only thing wrong is the ferret will kill anything it comes across after that

as for the jay iv never fed mine them before i usually chuck them in middens, but i woulndt feed too many crows or rooks theyre full of lice

A slightly obvious observation. If you were really worried about Weils disease would you have handled the dead jay and its feathers.

im not worried about me getting it i was worried about ferret getting it

all i know about lepto is that some rats carry it and you can get from infected water etc

if people catch lepto you know from the symptoms.

headache

fever

yellowing of the eyes

vomiting

etc

then you get antibiotics

The only danger from feeding rats to ferrets is to yourself,i have fed rats to my ferrets before and will do again but some folks have been ill before due to feeding rats, maybe ditchshitter was the one can't remember for sure but someone on here got ill due to lepto.
