Personally ,I wouldnt start a terrier on either of these quarry.Depending on the breed and temperment,I would let the younster have a look at some rats around 7-8 months old and depending on how it progressed with these I would allow the young dog to explore KNOWN safe holes at around the year old mark.In between this period the terrier usually self enters to rabbit.People have said in the past to keep a digging dog off the rabbits but Ive found that once started on bigger stuff the terrier will prefer it to rabbits and not mess you about. The secret with any dog in the early stages is not to overmatch it.If a youngster is daunted by anything when over a year old then keep it on the rats and try again later on.
