woodchip 2
Hi, Well the wife has decided she would like to keep some chickens, mainly for egg laying but also the odd one for the table. She has done some research into the various breeds etc and we have designed a coop and run which being a carpenter is my job to build!! The breeds she has short listed are, buff orpington, plymouth rock, rhode island red, buff sussex, welsummer. Can any of these be kept together happily?? they will have a raised coop and then a fairly large run. We are also happy for them to be out and about in the garden when we are around (we have a cat and a lurcher, so need to be careful). We are total beginners to this so any advice would be great, also does anyone know the best place to buy them in the Hampshire area??? Thanks!!

MissPimperella 0
All those breeds can happily mix together without problems at all given the right sized openning on the hatch for fatty orpingtons lol We have a mixed flock of different types for laying and soon to be set up seperate breeding pens for my pure breeds. Sigmund Fraud 0
We've got Rhode Island Reds out there currently, although we have a mixed lot in the incubator currently. They shouldn't have any problems mixing. Edited June 11, 2008 by Sigmund Fraud
Neal 1,866
Any of those will get on fine together, as far as I'm aware. I've got a Welsummer bantam who's great and have had Sussex in the past and intend to get some more this year. I'd recommend either of these two places in Hampshire www.chalkhillpoultry.co.uk and www.wylyevalleychickens.co.uk Good luck with whatever you decide to get, you won't regret it as there's nothing like soft boiled eggs from your own chickens and sponge cakes are real yellow as opposed to off-white. Delicious!
