Hi ooty, Jeff Burrell bred her and he lives at Wellingbourgh, if thats how we spell it? Thanks for putting the pictures up John. Molly is sharp on rabbits but we all know it takes a differnt kind of sharpness for old long ears!! Last week purely by accident molly found, marked and flushed old Puss and I never saw that same sharpness what I see on rabbits (I hope you get what I mean) but I'm not too worried yet because Molly is slow to mature and I hope she has a little more speed yet to find!! I think she will because I can see her shaping up all the time. I'm really looking foreward to meeting old and new faces at the Welsh.

I know nothing of M r Burral only what I have seen in his ad in the countrymans weekly, but I have been out and about many times with Warrens young pup, I dont Know if all the lurcher breed this way are the same, but the only two that I know of seem good honest working type dogs, the other is about 3 1/2 to 4 years old and is a cracking animal, like has been said already I dont suppose for one minuet every dog out of this mans kennels is a world better of yesteryear and what we have all been lead to belive over the years that, that is the legendery norfolk lurcher, many years ago I owned a bitch bred by a man called david pike who claimed to have the last line out of mick douglese's norfolk lurcher and has also said you pay your money.......the bitch turned out to be the best lurcher I had ever owned, not that I am any where nere being the expert dog man that many other are this is not a dig this is a fact, she also on the other side of her breeding had a havey collie blooded line so may be this is where her good points came from, but back to the burral tumbelers, from what I have seen molly has a great future in the field great strike good nose and Im sure Warren will not mind me saying for a coddoly looking bitch she has some turn of speed

hi there , mick douglas bought his first lurcher from jeff burrell , then his further and more reknown lines were actually my fathers breeding , mr mike docwra, whom also assisted mike kidd from north norfolk with his lurcher breeding , these were of smithfield type as the true smithfield collie died out over 100 yrs ago

 

mike douglas walked the marshes learning his marsh man trade from my father nr acle in great yarmouth next to the broads , he spent many happy years in this area and they remamined friends , mick always walked arefoot and even on a trip to ireland with my family he did the same lol

 

i would presume that yours is from the old fly line ? i would have to speak with dad to be sure though

I'd agree with you there Zac......

 

This type of lurcher has interested me ever since the Burrell ad's started to appear. I kept my eyes and ears open to see if anyone (both writers and aquaintances) could confirm these 'ancient types' really were all that.

I did ring Mr Burrell a few years back..... I liked him, strange critter that he is but I couldn't get my head around his logic.

I listened and listened and though some of his words seemingly came from a man that did/has run lurchers, some stuff just didn't stack up.

The bit which snapped me back down to earth was when I made the mistake of asking would they take foxes and from listening to all those words of how preserved this line was, was then informed of the Husky mating!!

 

For all that, i'm still interested in this line, what is nice to know is that such a well respected lurcherman as Warren has got one of these dogs on (oh, an the Malinois, another i'm really interested in), keep the posts going on her progress and good luck.

 

Oh yer, seen a Mick Douglas bred lurcher run about 25 years since, a beautiful animal and a good hare killer.

i have also met the man a couple of times at shows, the first time BREEZE, told me to have a chat with him as hes an intresting fella, ........ breeze is a wanker . fook me can he talk, like you bosun some of his logic was way out there,

 

ask him about tumbler shoulders :wacko: .

 

but he is an intresting chap , with a great old photo album , heel show ya, and when i saw him he had with him two beautifull looking rough coated lurchers with. of course looks mean nowt , but they were very nice. TOMO

Yes, Skycat I think in it's simplest terms, you could be right, over the years, whatever could be/is in the mix, they are just long time lurcher to lurcher bred dogs and no better or worse for it. Providing the breeders of these types put the better animals to the better animals and these are well tested, i'm sure nothing but good will come out.

John Bromiley had an attractive show dog called Isaac ,you probably remember it Skycat , that was a Norfolk type,and thats what it is now ,imo, a type.The difference between "specialist bred Norfolk and Tumbler lurcher pups " and lurcher to lurcher pups is in the price.Great pics ,is that the dog you had out with R?

There's 2 different bitches in those photos, although they are full sisters: the top one is the one you saw retrieving

 

Here's another pic of a dog that is very similar to the dog in those old photos Little Lurcher, and she is also a sister to the other two. Their grandfather was lurcher to lurcher for many generations and took all quarry before the ban, though he was not what I'd call a fen hare dog, though he caught more than a few with lurcher cunning.
