Sigmund Fraud 0
I'll start by saying that I'm not completely new to the sport, having shot before with a friends rifles; I've also done a lot of research recently and so feel free to elaborate on any points you make, I can always look up anything I don't understand. I recently moved house and gained quite a bit of land; my parents are using the land for rearing ducks and chickens as well as growing vegetables. Since moving in we've had two ducks killed by crows (tragic, but quite impressive how efficient they are). We also have a huge number of rats living around the vegetable area, mainly under a tarpaulin put down to kill off all the vegetation for new planting. I'm interested in getting an air rifle to deal with the crow and rat problems; I've done quite a bit of research and found a reasonably priced Cometa 220 .22 (£94 inc VAT) at Mole Valley Farmers. I'm on my way to uni in September, so the price I can afford is really limited to sub £100. My question to you all is do you think this is a good value rifle, and will it be efficient for hunting crows and rats. Any tips or pointers on using the rifle or hunting them would be well received, it would also be great if somebody could give me an optimum range for a clean kill on both animals. EDIT: Some tips on the kind of pellets to use would be excellent as well. Edited June 10, 2008 by Sigmund Fraud Quote Link to post
leeclackster 0
my advice is to forget about this rifle and by a secondhand exocet or lightning... i mean for another 40-50 quid and you will get sumthing worth shooting Quote Link to post
Sigmund Fraud 0
Good place to look for second hand air rifles? It would also still be good to know if it will do the job, I only intend to get this now, get the job done and then learn whatever I can about the rifles, I'll probably take it to bits a couple of times, to whatever extent I can. For that reason I'd prefer my first one to be sub-£100. Edited June 11, 2008 by Sigmund Fraud Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
hello mate....you'll need a full power air rifle to comfortably take out your quarry- out to around 30 yards.( would be ok for the rats upto 15-20 yards) the rifle in question probably isn't up to that......but don't quote me. a good seccond hand air rifle is the best option. have a look in the for sale section on this forum..or..put an add in the wanted section stating your requirments. other options (dare i say)....airgunbbs forum........guntrader.co.uk there are bargains out there.....but as always its finding them. have look for BSA, WEIUHRACH, GAMO......and other top makes. GAMO are cheap and cheerfull...........but do the job. if your buying from a gun shop ask if they can chrono it for you. ideally you want 10 ft/lbs - 11.5 ft/lbs..............if you want gauranteed knock down power. you'll have no bother getting your rats............but old mr crow..........well you wont get that close!! thats why you'll need a decent bit of power. pellets are a contentious issue as different guns prefere different pellets. air arms fields are consistent as are webley acupells. calibre is personal choice...............have a look at chris jones..pinned post "your first air rifle" for further info. sorry its a bit vauge.......any other questions....don't hessitate to ask. regards sean Quote Link to post

Sigmund Fraud 0
I've had a couple of offers for Lightning's and Exocets and I went and had a look in the local gunshop. What do you guys think of the SMK MOD 19 (£157 with scope)? The scope is good quality and shouldn't suffer any from the shock of firing. Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
i take it thats new?? there are two models of the mod 19. standard (qb)and full power(xs)...........you'll need the full power version. do you have any more details on the scope?? thanks sean Edited June 11, 2008 by SEAN3513 Quote Link to post
Sigmund Fraud 0
Just called the dealer. It's the full power model with a Nikko Sterling 4/32 scope. And the whole bundle is £157.99 and yes, new. Quote Link to post
SEAN3513 7
that sounds reasonable. haven't made much experience with SMK rifles........but the other sportsmarketing stuff iv'e been involved with seems good for the money. i would just check what spares are like before you commit yourself !!!! with a bsa or similar.........parts aren't a problem. let us know what you decide?? cheers sean Quote Link to post
