pointed pellets for greater distance?

Recommended Posts

just sat here bored as my dog is layed up so cant take her out, im thinkin up some random things! as usual when theres nothin else to do!

so here it is ive been looking at some rats that need doing but its at a lake and the only way to get them is from one side to the other if you get me, across the water. and its about 45-50 yards across im just thinking with my hw80 at just under 12ftlbs would pointed pellets give an advantage over my normal accupel that i use??

i know at normal distances they can over penatrate but would they work at greater distance or would the accuracy suffer??

any ideas appreciated i might even go and do a pellet test myself.

cheers

I did a few tests with some pine out to 45 yds and I found that accupells in .177 penatrated the wood further than H&N copper points and RWS Super point extra.

Would you want over penetration though? I have to admit to being a big fan of the RWS Hollow Points. You want all that energy to dissipate in your target... not to carry through.

Alot of .177 complaints, over .22, is that they cause 'too many runners...' Is that because the pellet goes through the target and lands in the grass on the other side? Too much speed? :hmm:

Domed will give you the best accuracy & range.

Accuracy wise I would tend to agree that domed would be better than pointed, but like for like weight wise the range will not be effected...you wander into the area of ballistic coeficient and if the pointed are better by any chance then the range will increase, just so happens that on the whole the domed win again on this one! Penetraion from a 12ft lb will be better with pointed and at 45-50 yards I doubt if many will go right through, so it is likely all the energy will be imparted.

Domed will tend to win overall though on this one, but 45-50yards with a 12ft lb is pushing your luck as you are aware!

I dissagree chris, When I was hunting with my solo in .177 I had a few runners But on the magority that didnt run I never saw much evidence of over penatration. If you hit the right spot you want as much penatration and punch as you can get.

Whilst i say this i did switch over to .22 but that was for the sheere impact of a heavier pellet. And it seems to be working out for me, But I would not hesitate to hunt with a .177 again.

Can see both points here me shooting with s410k in .177 just recently on sunday i shot a big doe from 25 yards just off the sweet spot bang down she went. Now i waited to see if anymore rabbits would come out when this rabbit got up and started to walk towards the wall in the field , it banged into the wall a couple of times before keeling over on it`s back. Went over for a look and on inspection i had hit it just below the right eye but on inspection it appeared to have no exit wound on the other side that i could see . Now this pellet could of exited the other side i just could`nt see it or possibly it may have shattered into jaw bone and exited via the mouth as there was blood from it`s mouth. Very strangre as when i hit the head they normally drop can only put this down to it not being the perfect knockout punch. I`ve also seen this with .22 my neighbour hit one square bang on th nut and it did`nt drop unbelievable .Interesting point to discuss though as this has`nt put me of .177 at all and gun was firing at top end had just been filled maybe`s other`s have experienced similar things interesting to hear from you`s atb FV ;)

problem with pointed is that they would have to be 100% perfect for flight ( so to speak lol ) which you will never get so as everyone else has said ........

go for domed :)

Below supersonic speeds, round nose have the better balistic coefficiency,

whereas, above the speed of sound, pointed noses have the best coefficiency.

Look at aircraft, jet liners,ie 747 etc= rounded noses=below speed of sound.

Fighters, ie Tornado, Euro fighter etc. pointed noses= above speed of sound.

(ths space shuttle kind of f**ks that argument up though, hope no one will realise :whistling: )

I believe it is down to there being a greater surface area on pointed pellets, so more friction.

Also as said earlier, pionted pellets would have to be very accuratly made which they are not!

Stick with sub-sonic dome heads.

cheers fellas now the second thing is do u think i 40 yards maybe 50 tops i would have the power to drop ratty as i am still pretty new to air guns.

i know about the efficient range of air guns and if it was zeroed to the right distance and i was aiming for the engine room would i have enough power to do the job?

cheers

40 yards easy 50 as ya know they are tough little tw**s av ad birds around fifty but rats are like iron plus ya need a good scope and steady hand :gunsmilie:
