Many Thanks young1982 hi why not a 6,5x55 swedish . you have all the virtues of 260 remington plus at much lower chamber pressure and 6.5xx55 is loaded by nearly all of manufacotries and can be loaded with 155 and 160 grain bullets which are much better on heavier games .regards dan_hunter Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Hi YOUNG1982 not sure whether you would be blessed with a large choice of ammo. Also choice of guns would be pretty limited, for example if you look on guntrader .co.uk there are only 4 for sale, verses 300 in .243. There are however 36 in 6.5x55. I have however no doubt that this calibre or 6.5x55 are excellent in performance. You may however struggle to get Fox with either calibre. That would depend on your FEO. What would your intended use be? Matt Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
. You may however struggle to get Fox with either calibre. That would depend on your FEO. What would your intended use be? Matt One thing I would say on that is, the licensing depts have just been adivsed by the Home Office and ACPO to allow fox on the larger calibre Deer rifles as standard if asked for. This is good news for anyone who is applying for a Deer rifle as they can now almost certainly get fox along with it. However, the Deer rifles cannot be held purely for Fox. SNAP SHOT 194
i personally would go for either the .308 or the 6.5x55, the 260 is finiky to reload i hear whereas the .308 and 6.5 are extremely accurate and proven to be easy to reload. bullet choice would also be a concern as would getting rid of it if the need was too. Not everyone wants a 260. whereas the .308 or 6.5 will sell regardless. All these have to be taken into consideration.........good luck Also considering that this would be your firstcentrefire how about 22-250 or .243, both proven through time. Quote Link to post

Matt Matt, I'm going to be joining a club at some point (possibly Brecon Rifle club), but because of where I live I can't see myself going that often so it's going to be used mainly for foxes and long range varmints. I do have a mate who's a keeper in Scotland who said I could come up for a weekend and do some stalking so it will be used for deer at some point. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
There appears to be no maximum calibre restriction. The Shooting Times article mentions that a Gamekeeper who is out stalking Red Deer, for which the biggest rifles are required as you know, can now shoot fox with the same rifle. The Stalker can now apply for the species specific condition to be removed and replaced with a new one. Here is the article; http://www.shootingtimes.co.uk/news/258211...for_vermin.html Regards SS Quote Link to post

So, without Stalking and Target shooting, Fox is to be your only quarry? As I you almost certainly wont get such a large rifle for just Fox. Why dont you try the Rifle Club, which is not far from Trap in Carmarthenshire? I will try and find a contact number and PM you. Regards SS Quote Link to post

young1982 1
SS, Foxes would be the main quarry on my hit list. Edited June 9, 2008 by young1982 Quote Link to post
mattydski 560
Here is someone elses view on the subject http://www.thehighroad.org/archive/index.php/t-130746.html On another discussion forum, there are concerns shown about barrel life on the .260 rem. If you are target shooting, would .223 or .308 not fit the bill. The choice of ammo and guns would be broader? .308 is a good stalking round and can now be used for Fox Thanks for that SS, missed that issue. What made you attracted to the .260 in the first instance? Matt Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
i believe the .243 will do everything you ask of it great target round, good deer calibre and excellent fox calibre. As for long range shooting get to know your gun and you will have no problems at long range. plus it will make things easier for you on your application. i believe it will make an excellent for centrefire for you......
