Night Hunter 109
Hi ,i was reloading using 55gr nosler ballistic tip spitzer heads and 34 gr of vihtavouri N140 which i found fine for foxes but was getting quite a bit of bruising on roe due to fragmentation, i asked for advice from the guy at the gunshop, he said that allot of the guys he knows use 55gr sierra gameking heads and swear by them because they have controlled expantion so i have bought a box of them to try but i am not sure how much N140 to use has anyone on here used these heads and if so what were your results and how much N140 powder should i use ............... cheers Tam Quote Link to post
v-max 2
I have used them & they were good but can be very explosive too. I was using 37.1g N140 & this is a max charge & i now work 36g for 55g bullets & i use cci primmers. Quote Link to post

So buy a good book and start reading.........it's the only way to pick things up, and getting some-one who know's what their at to show you how it's done. Quote Link to post
Night Hunter 109
Thanks for your input guys ,i have been reloading for a few years and although they were very accurate i was never happy with the bruising that my home loaded stuff was causing when shooting roe and i did not feel comfortable dropping bullet weight, i just thought that it would be better to ask if anyone else had found a load that caused less bruising rather than to have to buy heaps of different heads and powders until i found one that had a more controlled expantion,i will probably start loading at 34gr and use that as a benchmark since it worked well with the nosler 55gr heads i managed to find some stuff on the net that suggests 33.5gr is the starting load for n140 and36.5gr is the maximum load v- max what heads and powder do you use now and how do they perform mate Quote Link to post
v-max 2
You will find that the 224" cal heads like nosler BT & v-max etc are not for deer use as they are a varmint bullet. I will be honest & say i shoot roe with v-max with no probs but have found the 22.250 a great cal & drops the roe well but can be quite hard on the carcase with a SP due to its velocity. I cant tell you the starting load for N140 but my data gives 37.1g as max charge & i used to load 37-37.1g but have backed off to 36g when i load 55g bullet with N140. I got Hodgdons BL-C2 & Varget both 1lb tubs for £10 each & im on the BL-C2 just now with 50g v-max. I used to use Hodgdons powder till prices went up & went to Vit N140 but they are much the same pound for pound & back on Hodgdons i got cheap as i used to use H380 & BL-C2. I work between 50g v-max & 55g sierra gameking & 55g v-max with either N140 or BL-C2. Quote Link to post

auquhollie 0
If you were getting good groups with the other load and N140 then go down 1 grain and try working your way back up. It should be nearly the same load as its still a 55 grain head. Be safe though and work your way up looking for pressure signs. Ads Quote Link to post
dogga 1
this may be me being thick but i thought you had to use a minimum of .243 for roe?yet the thread title is reloading for the 22.250 Quote Link to post

Ads cheers Ads, it was not the accuracy of the load that i had the problem with i was looking for a load that will not cause as much hydrostatic shock on impact so i may have to look at dropping down to lighter heads and loads until i find a suitable load that still has the stopping power and is still within the legal limit here in scotland mate Tam Quote Link to post
