under shot jaws might not be present in the litter but sometimes it will miss a generation then it could show up again not recomended to use a dog like this but if it is to keep a certain line going then sometimes you have no other option hope this helps

I was thinking that too Dogger but the fact he's putting a Lakeland across his Russell maybe he's not thinking of a line, just a litter of good workers.

You'll see if the pups are undershot at a few weeks but if you think that dog is the one for your bitch then go for it.

Except if that problem passes on it could be a whole lot worse resulting in a dog unable to eat properly, let alone work. Find a dog with a decent mouth, loads about.

I REALEY HAVE HEARD IT ALL NOW WHICH BOOK DID YOU READ THAT IN THEN

If its the best working dog you can get your hands on use it,People go on about line breeding and inbreeding produceing bad mouths and its a load of rubbish. Most lines of terriers will produce bad mouths here and there it all depends on if you want to win shows. The chocolate bitch on my avatar is undershot and is one of the best terriers ive owned and even when bred back to her son produced 5 pups all with good mouths. The black dog is her litter brother and is also undershot and has produced some outstanding workers. Both their parents had perfect mouths.GOOD REPLY FROM FLATCAP.

Im glad to have enlightened you! Of course if you havent seen these things for yourself, I dont expect you to understand. I HAVE seen this and on several occasions, I board a beagle so undershot it has to eat slop out of a litter tray! or perhaps I am making that up! Pups born undershot get WORSE as their adult teeth come in, the lower jaw grows more than the top. People selling undershot pups usually do not know the severity of the problem as they dont usually see the pups they have sold in adulthood.

Some breeds are meant to be undershot, such as the Bullmastiff for example, however they are NOT long muzzled breeds and its much like a reverse scissor bite, a very undershot mouth can and does cause real issues for dogs.

Undershot bite. While the molars and some of the premolars occlude properly, the incisors and canines don't even meet and are essentially useless.

Taken from a genetic canine site. What the point of having a working terrier with teeth that are "useless?"

It all depends on what use the teeth are used for doesn't it ?

They might not be a Donny Osmond but I'm sure no Fox or Rat will complain :D

i would sooner breed from an undershot dog that worked rather than a dog with a perfect mouth that doesnt  to be quite honest unless you are trying to keep a line going and thats the only option or it has exceptional working abilitys i would go for a good specimen of the breed that has proven its self over a long career cheers trader :drink:

if your bitch is worthy off a litter and the undershot dog is a good grafter go for it ive never seen an undershot jaw effect a terrier in its work or even in everyday life for that matter if the terriers are more than capable for the job inhand go for it

find a dog with as few faults as poss.even if you get half a litter with an even bite, they will still carry the gene and it will come through in other generations, whats the sence in breeding faults???only people with faults in there dogs would advise you to breed that way.its plain common sence! always breed away from faults! look what happend when flat caps parents bred
