A sad story but at least you knew when the right time was. We have a Border which will be 2 in September, at the moment it seems so far away, she is in her prime, full of life (chased a fox out of the garden within the last hour) but one day I know we will have to make the same decision.

Just over 9 years ago we went to collect our first bought in Border Terrier bitch, Pendle. She cost us £250 at the time, but we knew the breeding was right for what we wanted. She was half sister to Malcs Border bitch, Needle, who was a fantastic worker.

 

As a pup, she was a right little character. When we bought our first house she was 6 months old. First thing she did was tree the neighbours cat! She was constantly stealing things – screwdrivers, bags of screws. She found a wet paintbrush and proceeded in dancing around the newly painted living room and giving the green walls a nice coat of blue splodges everywhere. A bright little thing, taught her to sit, stay and fetch in a few hours. And she always remembered it.

 

She proved an excellent worker in her first few years, never letting us down and was always older than her years. At the age of 3 she trapped a nerve in her back. A few weeks rest and treatment and she came too, although she always had a slight limp on that back leg. It never stopped her. Wick at ratting, a good little busher, and a good dog to ground. A good foundation bitch for our borders, and produced some cracking pups. If it wasn’t for Pendle we wouldn’t have the dogs we have now.

 

Age began to take its toll on her. And over the last few years she had the odd relapse with this nerve and would be laid up again for a couple of weeks. Usual trip to the osteopath and she’d be better again. Still with her trademark limp, still not letting it bother her for working. Always a happy little soul who loved the company of other dogs and people. We called her Penny 3 legs!

 

Only 2 weeks ago she disappeared to ground on a fox drive at a friends farm… an hour and a half dig later, she’d done her quarry and was well chuffed with herself. As were we… the old lass still had it in her! Her back leg had improved no end over the last couple of week as well. But we both knew it would be her back that would do her.

 

And it was. While out mooching about this afternoon, it just seemed to go. One minute she was marking a rabbit, the next minute she was sat down. Malc went over to her, put her on her feet, nothing. Back end totally gone. He brought her home and called me out. She was in obvious pain, back end was trembling, she was shaking, and her eyes said it all. She just sat there on the drive. There was nothing.

 

Phoned the vets, made an appointment, and took her and had her put to sleep. It wasn't an easy decision… we went through the treatment thing etc. But this time seemed so much worse than when it had happened before. It was almost as though she’d decided herself it was time to give up.

 

It was only this dinner time our 3 yr old daughter was reading stories to her on the sofa and saying ‘oh my friend Penny Pasta, I loves you very much’…

 

Pendle… without her we wouldn’t have the line we have now. We wouldn’t have had 9 years of her great company. She’ll be greatly missed. Other dogs are missing her already. Never gets any bloody easier does it.
