I've had a peek in her box this morning, shes sat tight and there is a couple of bits of shell by her side :clapper: its very exciting... I can't wait to find out how many we've got...:D:D

managed to sneak a peek underneath her this morning three have hatched but one was dead under the hay  ... we've got one cream chick and one brown and ginger, and the dead one was black...? two eggs unhatched, are these unlikely to hatch now...?

How many did you end up with BB? I picked up some hatching eggs today and there under the broody now. I think there's 2 Barred Plymouths, 2 Rhode Islands and another 2 - they did have initials on so I knew what was what but It made no sense to me what the other 2 were. Sure I'll find out when they hatch....If they hatch B)

We're down to one now, but that was nothing to do with the hen or health, it got... urmmm... terriered... even though there were measures taken to protect them... bit of a shame... but im sure i'll be doing it all over again next summer, hopefully with more success... Good luck with yours, Rhode islands are what i wanted, i like dark coloured hens, thats what i'll be trying to hatch next time, or perhaps some little old english game bantams...

Thanks mate. If these work out I'm sure I'll get some more too just early on in the summer. The fella was mentioning that hatching late can stunt the birds as all they want to do is put on fat for the winter instead of growing. We already have a few mixed here and ones a rhodey but it's a light one. Apparently these are the pure ones and are off really dark birds. Darker than this..

Funnily enough there under one of our bantams. Don't know what it is but it's got hairy legs, We call it Hairy Mary :D

The cock in there is a bantam too - can't remember what type but its golden with like black baring? I'll see if I have any pics on here.

Here he is..

2 hatched so far today - all are cheeping and pecking although 1 or 2 havn't started cracking yet. Is it best to let these 2 get on with it (the ones that havn't hatched) or just get the first tiny crack done for them?

I've always been told or read that you should always leave them to, if there not strong enough to to its doubtful they'd survive long...

dumb question coming up .

if you keep a couple of chickens do you have to have a cock with them ? and what is the reason why ?

the missus wants a couple when we find another place but i dont think she could put up with the racket a cock would make .
