I put a half dozen eggs under our broody hen today... We brought them off ebay as a pot luck mix which might be, Light Sussex, Welsummers, Exchequer Leghorn, Araucanas, Marans and a few others by the sound of it...

Has any one got a clue as to what they might be?

Thanks

So how old are those eggs likely to be? How long of a delay is it possible to have between the eggs being layed and when you start to incubate them or put them under the hens? How long does it take them to hatch and how soon do you know if they are males or females? It sounds like a real interesting past time but a pity i don't have room. Good luck with your eggs.....let us know what happens with tem.

Eggs for incubating should be as fresh as possible. But eggs can be upto 14 days old and still be viable aslong as they have been turned twice a day. If come through the post allow eggs to settle for 24 hours before Incubating.

Hens eggs take 21 days to hatch, ducks and turkeys 28 days apart from call ducks at 26 days and muscovy ducks at 35 days.

Depending on the breed, some are Autosexing like legbars and Dorkings, where upon hatching you can tell from the markings what is what, some you'll have to wait til around 8 to 10 weeks to know and silkies, well 6 months and wait til they crow or lay lol

After a while you get to have a bit of an eye for it and certain ones you just know lol

I have 3 incubators running at the moment with duck, turkey and hens eggs in. Turning by hand, 5 times a day but I have OCD so it makes that task easier for me lol

The Blues will have been layed by the Araucanas (or if they have legbars they lay blue/green aswell), Light sussex lay the pinkie coloured egg. The 2 browner eggs are likely to be welsummer, the darker of the 2 maybe a maran egg. And the white will be from the leghorn.

thanks, the white egg has disapeared with no traces... Im guessing it was a rat as we've had problems before i've got a couple of traps down in likely spots and hopefully i'll get the buggers before they take another one...!

I would say the top left and bottom right(light blue) are araucana, top right(white) exchequer leghorn, Middle bottom light sussex. Cant be sure about the others, but would hazzard a guess at the bottom left egg being from a welsummer. No maran eggs there mate. Good luck with them.
