Missie 1
There is no season for Muntjac so i've been told but they are very shy creatures and you won't see many, especially not in Sussex. What area are you going to? In 26 years of living in Sussex i've only ever seen one Muntjac deer. I'd be a bit wary of hunting the with lurchers pre ban too as they are pretty handy with their tusks but thats just my opinion.
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Hello Dan, Bring your big rifle if you want, it will do the job no probs. No rim fires or shot guns if your going out with a stalker. Otherwise most estates or stalkers will let you use their rifle, usually a .243. Theres definately good populations of muntjack in the counties of sussex, and you can shoot them all year round as they breed all year round. Not 100% on what the lower limitations are for munties regarding caliber size, sure someone will help with this. A charge of around 200 pounds (taken out by pro) for a munty, I think? Unless trophy...perhaps Hope this helps Regards DnN

I wish my wife was a hunter, but she is against hunting and makes my life niserable what about hunting rabbit and other small games nearby horsham?( what could be hunted legaly from mid-august to sept), yes me too I would not geopardys a nice dog 's life for catching a deer specially a deer with tusks regards dan_hunter
trappa 518
You can legally hunt rabbit all year round and with any calibre gun. Muntjac will need not less than .220 inches AND muzzle energy of not less than 1000ft lb so you can shoot the muntjac with a .222, .223, 22-250, 243 etc etc. If you want to shoot larger deer you will need a calibre not less than .240 inches and 1700 ft lb, so its probably a .243 or larger for england. Hope this helps.

I assume muntjac is much lesser animal than roe deers . is there anywhere too hunt rabbit and other smal games against daily paying in sussex area? regards dan_hunter
Dexter... 0
You wont find any Muntjac in the Horsham area, further towards Gatwick there are a few but not in quantity to go on about really from what ive seen. There is no regulated statutory closed season for Muntjac as they breed year round you have to be selective, when culling female muntjac immature or heavily pregnant does are selected to avoid leaving dependent young. The nearest other Muntjac to Sussex ive seen are just over the Kent border towards Tumbridge Wells. Edited June 6, 2008 by Dexter...
