TOMO 26,070
LAST WEEK TEUSDAY I HAD TO PUP THE PUP DOWN. ON MORNING EXERCIZE SHE HOPED OVER THE SHEEP FENCE AND PROCEEDED TO BECOME A SHEEPDOG. TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT THE DECISION WAS MADE TO PTS. SO A SHORT WALK WITH THE 12 AND A SHOVEL . WAS A VERY UNPLESANT END TO TUEASDAY. THE REASON I TOOK THIS ACTION, WAS NOT COME TO LIGHTLY. BUT I LIVE IN AN ESTATE COTTAGE. AND ALSO MY PEST CONTOL BUSSINESS RELYS ON THE LOCAL FARMING COMUNITY. THE OTHER THING WAS WE WENT ON HOLIDAY THE NEXT DAY, AND MOTHER IN LAW WAS HERE TO LOOK AFTER DOGS AND FERTS. SHE/S ABOUT 5 FOOT TALL AND 8 STONE WET THROUGH. SO COULDNT HAVE HER IN THE IMPOSIBLE POSITION OF TRYING TO CONTROL THIS DOG. WHAT IS REALY UPSETING FOR ME IS , SHE WAS STOCK BROCKEN , AND HAS WALKED TROUGH THESE SHEEP SINCE 12 WEEK OLD , AS THERE ONLY A HUNDRED YARD FROM OUR HOUSE. SO I DONT KNOW WHERE I HAVE GONE WRONG, THIS IS THE ONLY DOG I HAVE EVER OWENED THATS BEEN A STOCK WORRYER. THE ONLY CONSULATION IS SHE DID IT BEFOR WE WENT A WAY. FOOK KNOWS WHAT THE MOTHER IN LAW COULD HAVE HAD TO FACE. IT DONT BARE THINKING ABOUT/ ALSO AS I WAS SELLING HER AS STOCK BROKE DOG. IMGINE HOW MUCH OF A c**t I WOULD HAVE FELT . IF I HAD SOLD HER FOR THIS TO HAPPEN JUST A FEW DAYS LATER WITH A NEW OWNER. ANY WAY JUST THOUGHT YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW , AND THANKS TO ALL THE CHAPS THAT WERE INTRESTED IN HER. TOMO Quote Link to post

Guest SJM
Gutted for you I know what it can be like with young dogs I have 2 the now who are a nightmare, they have seen sheep on a pretty much daily basis since I got them as pups and still I dont 100% trust them Theres a field near me with some bucket fed sheep with no lambs which follow me closely when I walk through them, they come right up to the pups and intimidate them, the pups hate it! I have to put them on leads to stop them running off, but when I take them just half a mile up the road to another bit with blackie hill sheep, they look at them with their ears up all interested as if they want to chase them I think all you can do is try to expose the pup to as many different kinds of sheep as you can, tame ones, wild ones, ones that run away, ones that dont, and just keep correcting them as soon as you see any signs of interest. Normally at this age I would be able to trust a pup about 99% but with these 2 I always feel like they are showing too much interest when they see the sheep moving. I think its going to be a few months before I feel I can trust them to work at close quarters to sheep without paying any heed to them. Once a dog crosses the line and becomes sheep worrier its a much harder problem to deal with, I feel for you because its never easy to make that decision Quote Link to post

cúagusgiorraí 57
Sorry TOMO. I know what I am going to say is all shoulda woulda coulda, but if the pup was of a good coursing breeding then surely you could have found a suitable home? Also with perseverance you could have stopped the stock worrying. Perhaps, keeping the dog secure and only walking on the lead until she could be trusted. Its all in the past now. Quote Link to post
