We have squirrel when we can, I much prefer it to rabbit, we made some squirrel and pigion curry last year and it was very popular at a meet I organise. It can be hard work getting the skin off but other than that it's straight forward. Definitely one that should go in the pot :victory:

i find it hard that anyone who has tried squirrel doen not like the taste,ok,so alot can be on the cooking but in general i say it is nicer than rabbit, like a few have said you want at least 3,4 for a meal,i always have mine fried, luckily i do quite well on some days with anything from 3 to 12 in a day,see my topics, also great food for the dogs and ferrets, like a few have said they can be a tough to skin but i always find if i gut them, freeze them, week larer i find when half derfrosted they easier to skin,i do this with all my pigeons as i dont just take the breast of like most do but cook all the bird, reason being is once i had what i want of the bird ,whats left feeds a few of my russels, alot easier to skin i find than to pluck, seen plenty of squirrels on the roads run over the last few days, starting to travel by the looks of things

If you're going to eat squirrel make sure the Forestry Commission aren't poisoning them with Warfarin. :D

Chris

Any warning about potential poisoning is valid and worth mentioning but...

...Warfarin is now only available as a pre prepared bait under EC regulations from last year, if you were to eat any squirrel already contaminated with warfarin you would have to consume about 30 a day for the anticoagulant to have any effect at all, if you then stopped you would get better.

In addition, if, by any chance you did find yourself suffereing from warfarin poisoning, a trip to the GP and a shot of Vitamin K will cure you virtually instantly!

Totally agreed Deker and you're absolutely right but you forget to mention elementary chaos theory which dictates large stockpiles of the previous concentrate. In an effort to use up such stockpiles, or old boy mentality which immediately distrusts new products, batches could be incorrectly mixed.

While I accept the dosage would have to be really high, to effect humans, the dosage would be much smaller for dogs and smaller still for ferrets.

But the point I was really trying to make is... would you really want to eat an animal contaminated with Warfarin? :D

Despite the fact it was banned originally ages ago, and I think about a year given to use up existing stock, expiring last year..... I actually know of a country store still selling the stuff in concentrate (obviously old stock but also obviously illegal)....in addition..and despite legislation 2nd gen anticoagulants are commonly used on squirrel, most of which are far more effective and potent than warfarin (antidode remains the same)..never use the stuff myself...just shoot the little buggers...
