proofed moderators

Tell him to go f**k himself, all moderators have to be proofed if they are to be sold. You can make your own silencer (if you had the lathing skills) and use it even if it isn't proofed, but if you want to sell it then it has to be proofed. Same applies for retail so there's nothing special about his 'proofed' ones, I'd just buy where is cheapest.

It pisses me off that a lot of gunshops feel they have to rip you off and lie to you to make a profit, they'd make money much more easily if they priced their goods competitively and gave good customer service. Look at the Sportsmans gun shop down here, everyone goes there because they are cheap, friendly and always have time to talk to you without any bullshit. I only go to my local gunshop for things like cartridges and pellets, I don't have time for the owner there.

Moderators DO NOT have to proofed for sale, this is a grey area with the proof house, who want to keep themselves in work.I work part time in a specialist rimfire shop, some of the mods are proofed, some arent. When a barrel goes to the proof house, it has a mod on it, because they will stamp the mod at the same time, for the same price, thats why some have , and some havent. I have 3 different rimfire mods, and 2 different fullbore mods, none of them are proofed, or have to be. BUY THE CHEAPEST MATE.

Wow, I guess we are being suckered. What I said was told to me by an RFD and I took it as truth as I trust him, I guess if even he didn't know then the proof house wallahs have kept that lucrative secret tight.

At least I got the 'buy cheapest' bit right. :D

No Whippet, your dealer is only doing what he thinks is right, he may sell a couple of dozen a year? the guy i smith for does over 500 a year, he knows the proof laws, and grey areas backwards, lets just say, not everything is as it seems  A rifle is different mate, i can build one with an unproofed barrel, american lets say, and use it for years, but if i wish to sell it, i must proof it.

Peg, as i said earlier, its a grey area. The dealer i work for, and i,m not gonna mention him, has had all these arguments out with the proof house, and told them, if he,s breaking the law, he fully expects to be prosecuted by them, and remember, the proof laws and the breaking of them are CRIMINAL offences, not civil, that was 21 years ago.The wording is loosely...If the integrity of the barrel is compromised, it need re proofing. That to me means, the bore being drilled into from the outside , to fashion a recoil reducer etc, or any work done at the breech, where all the pressure is.I personaly dont believe it means, shortening [within reason] or muzzle threading. The proof houses have a hell of a lot less to do , since the handgun ban

NEW! Counsel's Opinion on the British laws of Proof relating to sound moderators and other muzzle attachments

Legal Counsel has now confirmed that:

A sound moderator is not a “part†of a “small arm†for the purposes of the Proof Acts.

There is no requirement in law for a sound moderator to be subject to proof.

The cutting of a screw thread on a barrel in order to affix a sound moderator is most unlikely to “unduly reduce it in substance or strengthâ€, although each case will depend on its own facts.

The pronouncement made by the Proof Authority in October 2001 is misleading and wrong in law in a number of important respects.

The full text of Counsel's Opinion may be downloaded and read here:

Here you go fella,s , taken from the t4/t8 site, as you can see, our collective pissers, have been well and truly pulled for a long time, by you know who :D

balbie.if,for example i got a barrel threaded.Would i by law have to get it proofed.Even if my mate threaded my gun for nowt?????? :good:

With your own gun you can do what you like with it whether it effects proof or not. It only becomes a crime if you sell it or give it away.

Obviusely use a large chunk of common sense along with that to prevent hurting your self. No muzzle threading is realisticly going to effect proof.
