Worst warrens, the one`s with feck all in em :wallbash:

You not use a dog to mark the occupied burrows ???

Im fairly new to this ferreting thing. How do I tell if a burrow is occupied without a dog. Because they always seem fresh but nothing bolts! I am not allowed a dogbecause my parents say I already have enough pets.

Just get a pup and tell your parents you found it in a ditch, lol. It worked for me right through my childhood lol.

My worst warrens are on the railway embankments, everywhere is loose stones, impossle to pegs or poles in, collapsing holes, brambles, shredded dogs feet from the running on rumble and constantly stopping the dog on rabbits headed for the lines, no fun at all.

Also one of my favourite warrens of a few hundred holes on banking in open an field can be a nightmare at times as it goes off the reading of my 8 foot MK2.

you dont need a dog but some swear by em to mark holes for you .

try fieldcraft and look around to see fresh signs of coney etc, keep an eye as you are walking to your chosen place and watch where they run ( now i would let them settle ) but go and put your ferts down to see if they produce , if they dont you know you need to spend a bit of time with some proven workers for yours to follow suit and work all the holes.

nothing worse then a veggie fert

iv a fair bit of land to ferret covered in rabbits and loads of rabbit warrens now all these rabbit setts are active at some point but not all the time .if you were out with me and you were putting down twenty plus nets on setts you thought were active and holding rabbits i could put my dog to that set and be 100% certain of no ocupants being in the holes by watching the dog so walk away from it .no netting up for nothing and only enter a ferret in a warren holding rabbits increasing the bag size and saving a lot of wasted time and effort .my terriers are part of my team and to go out with out them now is unthinkable .but each to their own ;) if you have no dog you just have to plod on make the most of what you have :clapper:

i agree but not everyone owns dogs and it is not set in stone that you need one for ferreting , i for one will start using a dog again when i have the space.

i know my ground pretty well and im in fortunate position that i can walk in a field and watch where my quarry is going but i understand what you are saying about netting 20 holes just to find no one at home hence why i said 'watch where they are going and then enter ferts' just to eliminate poor working ferrets .

i once spoke to skycat and she said exactly the same as you that it would be like losing an arm not having her dogs by her side.

just trying to give an alternative solution :)

The only thing about putting rabbits in then ferreting it might lead to more lie up's and i get enough of them with out asking for more and using a dogs a nice easy way and any that slips the nets the dogs there

the only way to tell if a hole is fresh is get down and smell it some are bald and some have fur round the edges were they have caught there fur in it youl soon learn it takes time and expierence , but honestly a good lurcher will tell you ive got a grew a collieline bred bitch two saluks they all can tell you if a rabbits about and one saluk and collie crooss are a hndred percent , but you dont need a dog but ive never been without one since 12 years old , even my big saluks who are used for roe and hares mostly when it was legal , ahah can mark a swishi or rabbit
