My Freecycle Welsh Springer 'Ruby'

Recommended Posts

Well, Yesterday, in my freecycle emails was one offering a Springer Spaniel bitch. Without hubby knowing I emailed. Then got an email back and a phone number. Rang the lady, was only a 15mins walk. Decided it was worth the walk.

Well, to me I think it was.

She is a liver and white 2 year old bitch who has had a litter a few months ago of 11 pups. She had lost the breeders details so I have no idea of her breeding. The lady couldn't cope as she was apparently crying all day while she is at work (I'm home all day so it is not an Issue to me). I have the word out to try and get more info on her or details of her breeder. Her breeder had parted with her due to her 5 month old dog attacking her all the time.

My local petstall owner on the market thinks one of her customers has one of her pups. seems a small world, around the age her pups would be from a litter of 11 Welsh Springers. So she is going to try and get the details for me.

She is however a fantastic little bitch, she is outstanding with the children and settled very quickly with the other dogs as tho she had always been here. First thing she did when she saw the ducks in the brooder was stand and point lol Bless. She is so gentle with the children that I am glad that when I met her and she sat in front of me and rested her nose against mine and stared into my eyes and I asked her if she would like to come home with me and she ran to the door and stood staring at me lol

I've hand stripped her and taken the mats out of her ears. She is ever so sound natured. Need to work on her around the poultry tho, but she did start licking a chicks bum like it was a puppy but as yet she is still a bit jumpy around them (but hey thats the breed lol)

She is not a welsh springer head shape and colour is wrong.

That is awful that she was put on freecycle how irresponsible!! I would get her to the vets and check if she is microchipped because it is not unknown for people to steal dogs, have a litter and then dispose of them through freeads etc.

Either way english or welsh she's a lovely dog lol

We are planning to work her as she is true to her breed type. She is lovely with the children.

Booked in to the vets on Monday. But health wise she is spot on.

I'm 99.9% convinced she's an ESS not a WSS. This link will give you some idea http://www.wssc.fsnet.co.uk/

She sounds like she has a lovely temprement, a pity for any dog to be on her 3rd home in two years, and to have already had a litter of puppies too.

I personally wouldn't breed from her, but get her spayed; if there is the slightest doubt over what she is or her breed type then it would just be irresponsable. If you don't know for sure if she is WSS or ESS, how do you know she is "true to her breed type"? I'm sure a loving home where she will be exercised, worked and trained, either as a pet, a worker in the field or even in agility, would make her a very happy lady indead.

Fingers crossed all goes well at the vets. Good luck with her, enjoy her; its lovely when a dog like that finds a loving "forever home".

I never said I was gonna breed from her did I? And true to her breed being the hubting and 'springing'

aspect.

Already had a few Jealous people but at the end of the day she is going no where and has a home for life. Having had dogs for 31 years and the fact that I breed and show my other chosen breed and have sheilds and trophys off them.

Unlike some people, I haven't got a dog to have a litter from just cause she is a bitch. If that was the case I'd have had 3 litters already this year but I haven't because they are on a year off. I say year off, one will have had a 2 yr break and the only reason I plan to breed from is because she won best brood bitch and res best in show and I plan to keep 2 pups from her litter and I have her mum, Dad and 2 brothers who are both Neutered and her sister.

Out of the 11 dogs I have 5 are neutered and spayed.

Doh.....you just edited your post in the "My Old Springer at Stud" thread.....!? Why? No mention of having a litter next year.......

I wasn't critisizing or suggesting you might "farm" her; I was mearly saying that I personally would spey her then give her the life she deserves, as I'm sure you will, a good loving active home.

I applaud anyone who takes on a dog that is in need of a loving forever-home. We get them in here on a weekly basis, and finding forever homes is not as easy as it sounds.

I was hoping I could trace her details and find her breeder. If I did and found she does have papers, then I would have her eye tested and hip scored. If she didn't pass those if she had papers. However if she dosn't she will be spayed (only costs me £30 so hardly like it's any hardship to do. And since as when I have a litter I tend to send the whole time sleeping on the sofa, Going without sleep and sending every breathing moment cleaning, training, caring for a litter it is not something I ever do without a high amount of thought. I have been breeding dogs for 11 years now, one of the major things I do when chosing people for my pups, Yes I chose. If I don't like them on the phone then they never even get to see the litter. If when I meet them I don't like them or for that matter if the bitch dosn't like them, then I say that I will have to consider them and once gone I will inform them that sadly they have not made my short list. I also make anyone who has a puppy, to sign an agreement to say that for any reason what so ever, that they needed to rehome the pup, no matter how old, they will inform me and give me first refusal. I will always take my own pups back, I keep 2 spare kennels for that purpose of just in case. I have Keano, he came back in October and is 4 years old, neutered and 32 inches at the shoulder, a good 8 inches bigger than his mum and sister and 6 inches bigger than his dad. They couldn't cope with his size which was caused from having him neutered too young and he went like the Italian Castarta, Huge! lol He is home for life now with us, He will never be rehomed. The great thing was that as soon as we got out of the car, he jumped out and straight up our path and stood waiting at the door, then straight into the livingroom, on the sofa and passed out. Home with mum. Of course his mum was very happy to see him and him her. She is 9 yrs old and retired fatty lol but so full of beans and never had a days ill bless.

However I do respect your post cause I have much the same feelings. Like how p***ed off I was to find out that a certain breeds rescue has 2 people. 1 who is made to travel around picking all the tail end dogs the spayed and neutered ones. Any that are good enough for breeding are being sent to teh other person because in her words 'she can have a quick litter from them' Now I think that is sick since as the rescue policy is that they are to be spayed! That is puppy farming and the other rescuer is fighting a losing battle and she works so hard for the rescue dogs themselves.

I'm most likely the same as you hun. Get p***ed off at people who willynilly get dogs, have a litter, pass them on.

Ruby WILL have a home for life, unless I drop dead in which case I know I have 3 sisters and a brother who would fight over them. My brother would win but thats because he lives with us lol and so therefore has first claim. But yes if I died, things are already in place for all my pets. But me dying would be the only reason I could no longer keep her.

She also happens to be the only dog my daughter has totally taken to, the rest she sees as 'mummy's dogs' even tho she knows they are the family lol but Ruby, she has told us all, that she is her friend. She even started training her and Alex is only 6. I have also brought my 2 children up with a high respect for animals, where their food comes from and how we have to have a balance. I'm proud of them both cause if they walk past the dogs water bowl and it's nearly empty, they don't say they will just get a chair, rinse the bowl, refill and put back down.

xx

Thank you for your post tho, shows that there are others out there who care xx

great story glad you were there to give her a loving home, and regardless of english or welsh she's a cracking looking dog all the best to you both and hope everything works out for you both.

Thank you. She's currently asleep by my feet with my hubby's staffie x collie. She has been like a shadow lol

She was fantastic with the horses when we went to see my pony this morning. She had a run around the top of the field and came back each time she was called, quickly and bouncing with happiness bless. Hubby has warmed to her aswell but that was because he was asleep on the sofa and she stood up on him and had her nose near his mouth like she was checking he was breathing, he snored, she snuffed and got down lol
