Missie 1
My greyhound bitch has an open cut that can't be stiched, she's been given some abs etc from the vet but I need to stop her from licking it so it can heal and it can't be covered as it doesn't start healing. Does anyone has any ideas? All the vet could suggest was a plastic collar but she won't tolerate it and goes mad so can anyone suggest anything else? Everything i've tried so far she just licks off. The problem with sighthounds is that their skin is often too thin and too tight to be stitched. How large and where is the cut? If not too large, if the edges of the wound fit to one another, AND if the wound is clean, you may try using a little bit of "Krazy Glue" (or another cyanoacrylate glue) on the wound edges and gently stick only the edges together without overlap. Prevent to have glue on your fingers, for your fingers will be stuck together or onto your dog.... This glue is also used in human surgery. Spray liquid band-aid onto the entire wound or a thin (!!) layer of "Krazy Glue" over the entire wound edge. This will all automatically peel off when a new layer of skin is formed underneath. But above all when you glue a wound leave a little bit unglued for a weep point otherwise it will become infected and with no way to drain it off (just a little tip )
deputydog 68
what about using a muzzil so she cant lick it ,just an idea? only problem with using a muzzle if she trys to lick it she is gonna cause more damage with the muzzle
Missie 1
The wound is about the size of a 10p and jsut above her knee. There is no flap of skin, it can't be stictched or glued, I just have to leave it open to heal unless I have skin grafts etc which apparently often don't work with greys. I tried the muzzle and she did more harm than good. I've also tried the liquid plasters too, she just attacks it till she can lick the wound again. I think I need something that won't do the wound any harm but will put her off licking at it. It is getting better, I was treating it myself but because it didn't seem to be healing well and she was lame on that leg I took her for an antibiotic shot. The vet isn't concerned about the wound itself, i've just got to ring him after the weekend and let him know how shes doing but i'm concerned that she'll hinder the progress if she doesn't leave it alone. I'm very lucky with my vet, he's great and understands that sometimes my dogs pick up injuries that normal pet dogs don't tend to pick up.

Thank you for the tip, its not really patching up I need, just something to keep her from licking the leg and stopping it from healing. I shall remember that though, cheers. DevoidOvTalent 0
This is just above the fetlock joint, right? Get yourself a very long sock or a piece of lightweight breathable material sewn into a tube shape (old t-shirts work well), should be long enough to go from above the elbow to below the fetlock joint. Cut the toe off the sock. Put the sock on her leg, and tape it above the elbow all the way around, just tight enough to keep it from sliding over the elbow and down the leg. If it is too tight it will chafe. You do not need to tape it to the skin. I personally like duct tape, the dogs don't like to chew it and it doesn't stretch, but any durable tape will do. Tape the bottom of the sock around the leg below the fetlock, to keep it from sliding up the leg. She can still lick the leg with the sock on but cannot abrade the wound or lick off any scab that forms; the sock material breathes so the wound will get air. Terry cloth towels will also work and breathe well, but if you don't sew it into a tube you can just tape it in three or four places down the leg to keep it from opening. To check or clean the wound, just untape the bottom, slide up the sock to check, then put it back.
lurchergrrl 1,441
Missie when May came up to me from Wales she had a disgusting open wound in pretty much the same place. It was huge tho, easily twice the size of a £2 coin. It was weepy and nasty looking, people used to give me dirty looks when I walked her - not only was she all boney but also looked like I was abusing her! She had abs for it which I used, but otherwise just left her to it. She licked it a lot but it didn't seem to make things worse so I didn't bother with it. After several weeks it healed up and she's now left with a hairless round scar about as big as a 20p coin. Nowt to worry about I shouldn't think. But that germolene stuff sounds good. gwhite80 0
You could try a few drops of citronella around the wound, animals cant stand the smell, might put her off
