ChrisJones 7,975
Hi all, need help. Just been given a contract to kill what seems like a few thousand rabbits on some playing fields next to a golf course that I already control rabbits on with a 10/22. Problem is that the playing fields are Council property and will only let us use air guns but, the catch is its all at around 100yd+ range. I have never used or owned air so what would you guys recommend. Cheers Hing. Hiya Hing Any ideas why the local council will only allow you to use air rifles? If they've risk assessed the situation they'll know that air rifles are probably the last choice, and it's very surprising that they'll ignore everything but shooting. They have a legal obligation to keep the land clear of rabbits. It's not really their call how it's done, it's up to you as the pest control technician on site. I'd certainly be looking at other options to compliment shooting. If you're looking at those kind of ranges, for shooting, then you'll find it impossible with a standard air rifle. I'd also doubt that an FAC would even be legal if you're in a residential area. I'd be looking to reassess the situation before spending money on an air rifle set up. I'd be having another chat with the council to tell them that their stipulations will see a minor impact, on rabbit numbers, if any at all. Basically, you're the professional, you should be telling them how it works, not the other way around. If they're not happy with your solutions then walk away from the job. Politely remind them of their legal obligations before you leave. It's not worth the headache of taking on a job, like that. They'll be pestering you, because they're not seeing results and you'll be the one with the sleepless nights. I've done the job a long time and if I can't do it on my terms then I don't want to do it. I've made a career out of solving problems and if your council can't accept who the professional is it's time to refer them to someone who will do it the way they want. It'll never get solved but at least it won't be you with a headache tablet prescription. Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
Halve your distance and use a 30ftlb rapid with nv, shooting from a static position 40/50yds in front of the warren with the wind in your face.Using an 80/100ftlb air rifle I fear you will be using sized bullet heads to keep the accuracy and therefore safety wise no different to .22lr. Thanks, Safety not a problem. They just will not allow us to use a 22lr and feel happy if we use the term Air gun. There are no restrictions put on us about how powerfull they are. We take all precautions throughout the area where we dont only clear rabbits but use 22/250 on foxes and Roe deer and .243 on Reds. we are extremely safety concious at all times. Regards Hing. Hi Hing safety was not my issue, it's just as you go passed 40/50ftlb the pellet choice with accuracy drops tp zero and you end up using sized bullet heads and a lot of air per shot. The sized heads from daystate are not cheap even if you get a rifle to shoot them strait. How about a rising long net. Neil Edited June 1, 2008 by stillair1 Quote Link to post
RatSnatcher 0
Longnet full stop good luck with what ever you choose but the net would be my choice, if you cant get near them then shooting will be a waste of time one crack of a rifle and they sound like they will be gone in no time Quote Link to post
