some times i think you have to get pups out of young dogs after there first seasons work cos if they are lost to ground you cant get any pups then and you will of wished you had

i would have thought the 1st season dog gets the easy digs .

id prefere to breed a litter out off well proven stock the more seasons under there belt the better but theres allways the chance off missing the boat and regreating it till the end off time at the end off the day it all depends on the individual dog and how it works. and how long is a season me myself am a weekend warrior unfortunattly working all week so the dogs will only get 1/4 off the graft a season than some body whos lucky enougth to get out all week. but at the end off the day the owner knows there dogs and working style so only they can say ive seen dogs jib at 4 or 5 and at the other scale ive seen dogs retired at 2 or 3

each to there own but id reckon youd need at very least 2 good seasons under their belt and then only breed to restock or lighten the load of the other dogs you keep.and i reckon us weekend terrierlads dogs get [depending on the amount we keep that is] get as much graft as the top boys.i dont follw a hunt and me and my pals can dig to our dogs every time theyve heald surely thats all the "pro,s" can do.happy hunting.lee.

Good points there Greggy!

I'd say at least 2-3 seasons work with some good long digs thrown in to make sure they're stayers. In an ideal situation i'd say work them till they're retired then breed a litter from them to replace them but obviously it does'nt work like that, esp if your trying to keep a line going.

Ive got 2 pups here, one was from a 9yr old bitch and the other from a 10yr old,one just started work and doing well, hopefully they'll carry on where their dams left off.

this is a good point, if a bitch has a season under her belt, when i say season i mean 20, 30 + digs under her belt, you should breed of her she obviously has what it takes and it would be silly to risk losing that blood in your lines or in the terriier gene pool generally, and now days i myself cant keep a good hard dog around me for more than 2-3 seasons as they become walking jail sentances. even if they are looked after 110%. the way we breed terriers is now determined by the times we live in. i would be happy to continue working these big stroing dogs as i know they would work all there life but goverment and certain animal charities have decided its not allowed. i say breed off em as soon as you are happy they have made the grade!!!!!!!!!

I class my dogs as young inexperinced dogs until they have worked for 3 working seasons and would not consider breeding out of them until they are at least 4 year old, and have proved themselves worth breeding out of. I am talking about digging terriers only....

Just asking the question, what do you class as a terrier worth breeding out of ?

Dev not picking on you but I see you Just bred a bitch at 2 year old, which I class as a baby itself.

Not trying to upset people, just would like to see what others think. What you do in your kennels is up to you and nobody else, they are your dogs.

smelly dog if you were not picking on me you would have no need to mention my name in this thread, my pups are MY bussiness no one elses!! i bred them for my self and my mates ,NOT for sale!! yes the bitch is young and ideally i would not have bred from her for at least another year,BUT i wanted double bred pups from her sire and as he is crazy hard i didnt want to take the chance of missing out, as he could get killed in a dig, then i would be kicking myself!! :feck::feck::feck:

Well common sense should dictate that unless your breeding for money then your dog will be 3-4yrs old before you breed. Shouldn't really see any work 1st year as its a pup, 2nd year should start to enter and by the 3rd year should be experienced enough to know if dog is worth breeding to. But each to their own I've seen young dogs that are stonewall hard by 1. 1/2yrs and much older dogs that are shite. Down to personal choice I spose.

just to try and break up a fight dev is nt a dealer and the dog he s looking to double up on is from what i can gather very hard so he s in a pridicament, take a chance and breed young or hold of and take a chance and lose the sire.Tigerdog s thread about when to breed of hard dogs was good and i reckon if the dogs workstyle was different dev knows the situation and its not ideal but ,needs sometimes dictate the circumstances but hopefully dev will be able to post in a few years to show off the results of the gamble as fromwhat i know of him and his mates they re not green.

On the other end Dev, from what i know of Smelly dog he an honest enough fella and i dont think he was trying to undermine what you where at just causing a debate using your circumstances which i and im sure he knows where neccessary.
