Meat Chickens coming tomorrow! yay!

We have a varied Selection of poultry from our small flock of 11 layers to pure and rare breeds. We do eat the odd spare Cockeral but on our fancy and pure breeds you don't get much on them for the 25 weeks of growing lol certainly not with bantam breeds.

So we decided to order some Meat bird Chicks of a very well known supplier who came very highly recomended.

Got 25 meat chicks due tomorrow morning. Got the brooder all set up for them ready.

And 24 meat bird eggs to go into the incubator. They will be free range once off heat and will be corn reared for that lovely golden skin. I can't wait and neither can the kids. They get huge in 10 to 15 weeks but this strain is from very good strong legged type so no poor legs and they get to be running round eating nice bugs, slugs and snails.

 

Roll on August! I'll have lovely freerange, homereared birds for the table.

I dont blame you, what with the rising cost of EVERYTHING except our wages! how much did they cost you for the chicks? also how much where the eggs?

 

 

The chicks were 80p each and eggs are 35p each

 

Whats pushed towards it more is the rising cost of feeding my 4 year old son, who happens to be the same size as my 6 year old daughter and she's not short lol He's a live wire and constantly on the go and eating. He is far from fat but god he's strong lol He has Autisum aswell which sort of adds to his activity levels of a normal 4 year old 10 fold lol

He eats as much as his dad, If not more lol Good job he likes eggs.

He'll have 4 eggs on his own for his breakfast, then toast, cereal and a cup of tea!

what breed where the chickens you have coming for the table? or whats the best breed for the table? im having thoughts now!!!

 

 

They are Poulet Whites. I can get you the contact details if you'd like. I'm having to meet him at the motorway junction as he does deliveries every fortnight on a Thursday. Min order is 25 Chicks. They are bred to have strong legs to hold the weight and they are a very healthy strain. Over the last 6 months I have had nothing but good reviews of him and his birds. All depends where you are as to wether your on one of his delivery routes. I'm having to collect another 50 for a butcher in Nelson as he can't collect as he runs his shop so he's collecting from mine in the evening.

wish i had the space to do this aswell , kids dont half put it away now they can eat like its just for fun and i mean that litraly my 4 year old daughter would sit and pick the meat of a chicken till her fingers fell of if id let her and will happily walk around and eat a few boild eggs as thow its sweets but i dont mind as id much rather thats what went into her than half the crap her friends eat. get some picks up of them once they are ready let us see how they turn out bud.

My daughter is the same, she'll fight me for the chicken skin, and well she's faster than me lol

She's really looking forward to eating her first one.

Couldn't stop laughing when after she had asked how I was gonna kill them and get the ready to eat and I told her and went through the whole process to oven ready for roasting. 'awe' was her reply 'whats up Alex?' 'I wanted Chicken curry, I like Chicken Curry.'

 

I couldn't stop laughing, she's so sensible.

You could get some hatching eggs, try 6. could get upto 6 hatch. So even if you had a small garden it is still possible and they are ready for the table in 10 to 15 weeks.

Everyone who has the chance should try a go at home reared. It really does taste amazing.

Well, I'm not only rearing these for me. 5 are a birthday prezzie for my friend who lives in rented so can't do it herself until she moves. and I'm the eldest of 6 so big family and all are having a couple each. The rest will be going in the freezer, for when we need to use them.

We are growing out veg aswell to go with them, already got my fruit trees showing promise of a good crop even after having moved house with them in winter lol

any other breeds that are good for the table? do you dispatch them all at once or do them as you need them?

 

 

Well, some great utility breeds. slower growing but certainly very flavoursome.

Dorkings are good, Indian Game, Orpingtons but they are really slow and eat like bins.

I'm planning to keep a few females and crossing them to a silver dorking cockeral to try my own meat cross.

 

Light Sussex Utility Strain, slow growers but good meat birds.

 

Some less known breeds

Lincolnshire Buffs, Norfolk Greys are good utility breeds, not very well known as rare. Got 1 linc buff and a trio of norfolk greys. only 4 weeks old at the mo.

Picked up 21 chicks and 30 eggs. small orders are filled from extras they hatch and he had 21 available so he put in 6 extra eggs.

They are proper cute fluffy balls lol In next to no time they will be huge! lol

 

All settled into the brooder now. get some piccies on in a bit

well with all this going on about broiler birds ect i decieded to take the plunge and buy in some Indian Game x Dorking(blue egg laying) eggs from flea bay ..and today i was greeted by 7/12 lovely big chicks...mmmmm cant wait till there big enough .

It's a great feeling knowing that you reared them, knowing what they have eaten and they have had a natural free range life before hand which will mean they taste 10 x's better.
