I'll avoid the obvious jokes, but this looked interesting

The European beaver is to be reintroduced to the wild in the UK, Scottish environment minister Mike Russell has announced.

He has given the go-ahead for up to four beaver families to be released in Knapdale, Argyll, on a trial basis in spring 2009.

The beaver was hunted to extinction in this country in the 16th century for its fur.

Mr Russell said: "I am delighted that this wonderful species will be making a comeback.

"They are charismatic, resourceful little mammals and I fully expect their reappearance in Knapdale to draw tourists from around the British Isles - and even further afield."

Other parts of Europe, with a similar landscape to Scotland, have reintroduced beavers with positive ecological benefits, he added.

The trial will be run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland over the next five years, with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to monitor the progress.

The beavers will be captured in Norway later this year and released into the wild next spring.

"I very much hope to see them flourish in the woods of Knapdale and lay the foundation for a wider reintroduction in other parts of Scotland," Mr Russell added.

Professor Colin Galbraith, Director of Policy and Advice for SNH welcomed the decision, saying: "For the first time we will have the opportunity to see how beavers fit into the Scottish countryside in a planned and managed trial."

i think its great.

remember the post last year about wolves, bears, elk etc being released on some Scottish Lairds estate? it seems far fetched but it could happen if done slowly and carefully over the years.

my own opinion is.... if you were to REINTRODUCE an extinct native species then you should start at the bottom. Beavers first(get your mind out of the gutter now) then Moose(i mean elk..) then lynx. those three live in a balanced ecosystem in Canada. the beaves make ponds, and elk eat the vegetation out of the pond, aaaaand the lynx keep the beaver population in order. i wont go into fine detail about all the other things that go on in that ecosystem. but mostly good things.

but again its not something to happen over night. maybe over a period of five or ten years?

ever notice the way that line is used to explain the extinction of any animal, but then animals rights/anti's say hunting has no effect on animals numbers!

Yeah but; Ye know what this place is like, BC. No sooner will it be announced that they're out there before some dick will be asking what Dog to hunt them with. Then some sixteen year old will catagorically state that " X " is The Dog for the job. And, before ye know it, there'll be a Cracking example of just such a Dog available (Conveniantly, in Scotland), being sold " For A Mate ". Said " Mate ", of course, happening to have a litter of such Dogs underway, from the same " Breeding " as the Seller (for a mate) happens to have ~ and is open to PM's about.

Oh; And then one or two people, who never seem to Post about f*ck all else, will galvanise into action and start vigorously defending the 'good' name and character of the person trying to peddle the pups 'for a mate'. There'll be an on Thread general altercation. Then some " Moddie " will finally lumber into action, Locking the Thread and thus leaving the gory details and imploration to " PM me " for ever on view, to be bumped up a year later by some other prick whose second ever Post will be to ask; " How much 4 der pupps, m 8? "

Oh, and ..... " Pre Ban. "

I watched something on tv a few month ago about that and they have actually already started and there's a lake with the breeding program going up in scotland, they look canny things but it did say they can cause some distruction with the felling of trees. Id like to see wolves and bears back here but id be a bit more cautious when walking the dogs lol

the number one complaint of several of the farmers here have been beavers. More than coon, chucks, opossum etc. Lots of the farmers have stands of woods to sell off down the road and a pair of beavers can devastate a few acres in a season.
