I always thought that being sh*t on by a bird was supposed to bring good luck for some reason - I was driving early this morning when what must have been a big gull or something similar whitewashed my car - I would never have believed that so much could come from something airborne!

No massive change to my luck though I have to say . . .

To be Honest I have always thought we make our own!! But time and time again I hear people say "You should do this because it will bring you good luck" or "Don't do that or you'll get bad luck"....

Any suggestions on what and what not to do? because some good luck would be nice ;), Fire some up and lets put them to the test, good or bad so I know what to avoid  ....

I've always found you should prepare for any eventuality so, spare bulb, fuse, multi-tool and tape that should be all the luck you need.

Dropping a pair of scissors is said to warn that a lover is unfaithful. :hmm:

Never place shoes on a table as it means bad luck for the remainder of the day.

Knock on Wood - It was believed that good spirits lived in trees, and that by knocking on anything made from wood, we could call upon these spirits for protection against misfortune.

When you move to a new house, always enter first with a loaf of bread and a new broom. Never bring an old broom into the house.

Be kind to others - What you do (good or bad) will come back to you threefold

Cousin of mine had a plaque on his wall; " A Friend In Need Is A Pain In The Arse ". I'm starting to see the truth in that.

Here, in Co. Leitrim - I can't speak for the rest of Eire - a Goat on the property is said to bring good luck? I personally found they bring stress, damage, costs and strained neighbourly relationships.

I can only imagine the favourable view of goats came off the ferry, from Holyhead :whistling:

I've heard that killing spiders is supposed to bring bad luck.

I always salute a single magpie so it doesn't bring me bad luck: comes from the rhyme:

One for sorrow,

Two for joy,

Three for a girl,

Four for a boy,

Five for silver,

Six for gold

And seven for a secret that's never been told.

Apparently there are more lines in a different version but this is the one I know.

As for making your own luck: I reckon the secret is to think positive all the time: not easy I know, but if you appreciate the maybe tiny bits of good luck, or the good things in your life instead of focussing only on the bad things, bad feelings, then that state of positivity starts to affect you and those around you in everyday life.

I know that this is a bit heavy for this time in the morning, but instead of seeing the bad things around you, try and see the good things and be happy with anything that isn't totally bad.

For example: I lost my 13 year old lurcher recently: OK, so that's to be expected at her age, but I did feel happy that she didn't suffer and only had one rather dismal morning before I made that decision we all dread making. Its a bit the same if one of my dogs injures itself: I try and use the time that that dog must spend on the lead while its healing by training it to do more interesting things, playing with it, getting a better bond etc. See what I mean?

Be a glass half full sort of person instead of a glass half empty person! Think negative and you will attract negativity.

Does this work for anyone else?

I like your thinking Skycat  Life isn't about what happens to you: it's about your attitude to the things that happen :) Isn't always easy to be a half-full type of person, but I think doing our best to be that way charges up our karma.

Killing spiders is supposed to make it rain or something. There must be millions of spiders killed in this country every single day

Never crack a mirror, brings bad luck for seven years.

Never let a fair haired person be the first to cross your door at New Years (I think, learned that one from my scottish ex-inlaws).

Never walk under a ladder.

Salute a lone magpie with 'Mornin' Mr Magpie' or so my mate tells me. We don't have that one in Canada.
