Guest snatch flcc Posted January 10, 2006 Report Share Posted January 10, 2006 Went out last night with a mate on some permission I have (Mr Darcy, Rob and Tim you know where I mean) first time out this year on the lamp so was full of optmism. I had my 2 big dogs and was with a mate who had 2 whippets, First 2 fields the whippets had some runs on rabbits but didnt pick any up, both were a bit unfit but tried hard, Iv never seen whippets on the lamp before, they run ok but just 2 small for me, anyway went over to the main ground where the whippets caught a rabbit (yippee!) then gave my bitch her first run on a hare (not normally into lamping hares but on the this ground there are so many the farmer is happy to lose few) she set off well turning it all over the place but the hare managed to make it to a small copse out of sight of the lamp so she lost it. Next up slipped my dog with a good run up he had a choice of 4 sat together! chose his hare and had a cracking run but as the ground was hilly the hare made it over the brow out of the beem and he lost it! Next up both whippets had a good run on a hare but lost over another brow, seemed to be the story of the night! Ideally on this ground you need 3 lamps all about 75 yards apart to cover to dips and brows! We the decided to try some flatter fields, a hare got up as we were walking and the whippets were off again put in some good turns but lost it in the rape. Next we spotted a herd of Fallow in the distance so made for them but the wind was all wrong and they were off before we could get close enough, then seen a muntjac in the wood couldn't run him obviously. Then we went on some stubble fields and my bitch had probably the best cousre I have seen on a lamp, was running it for about 3-4 mins, I lost count of how many turns and strikes she put in, all you could here was me and my mate shouting ooooh! arrrhh! Go on, almost! ooooh arrrh get on! I would have bet my house she was going to pick it up but it was obviously the hares day! My dog also had a good run but lost his in the hedge, next we went onto a huge 100 acre rape field and spotted a fox in the distance, started to squeak him in, after a few minutes 1 fox became 2! They were about 100 yards away sat just on a slight brow about 10ft apart, we tried to sqeak them in closer but they were have none of it so we slipped my dog but unfortunately as expected they went straight out of sight over the brow and the dog didnt get a proper sight. Decided to head back (with another couple of runs but an empty bag), when we got back to last field I had a flick about and was amazed to see a fox sat in the middle of the field! I immediately slipped my dog and he got to it turning it a few times right on it then ran it into a garden, we waited for a few seconds waiting to here if he had caught it ( Surely we have to get something I was thinking to myself) but the he came back empty handed about 30seconds later. We got back to the cars a bit tired and had a well deserved flask of tea, and took a few minutes to reflect on the evenings events and to be honest we said to each other what a great night! Ok the bag was almost empty but we seen at least 40-50 hares, about 30 rabbits, a herd of fallow, a muntjac, 5 foxes (only got close to 3) had some cracking runs and helped get some not as fit as they should be dogs that little bit fitter. Its not all about catching things its about being out and enjoying your dogs and seeing them work (even if its not up to there normal standard!) All that game will be there for our next outing there in a few weeks where I hope we will be a little bit more successful for dogs! Hope you lot have better luck lamping than we did, lol!
