Hi im Alex, just joined

im a little confused about the regulations regarding FAC's;

Im 16 and have had my SGC for about a year now.

I got it through my dad because he had the safe and everything already checked out.

I'de really like to get my hands on a 17HMR (quad varmint) for the rabbits but i dont know if i can do the same thing as with a SGC i.e. hold a FAC under the age of 18 and have a rifle transfered over as a gift.

p.s. my dad doesnt have a FAC so it may be harder :wallbash:

help appreciated

You can have a section 1 firearm under the age of 18. Once you are 17 you can purchase a firearm excluding airwapons. You can have a firearms certificate if you are over the age of 14.

"It is an offence for a person under the age of fourteen to have in his possession any firearm or ammunition to which section 1 of this Act..." (Firearms Act 1968 sc 22 (2)

the difference between a shotgun and FAC is for an FAC you have provide a good reason for the firearm in question and the amount of ammo you want to aquire and hold

It is difficult to hold an FAC when under 17.

It is not difficult to obtain when under 17 but the transfer and purchase of Firearms and Ammunition becomes tricky.

Here we go then;

1.You can apply for your FAC now as long as you have a separate safe for them, this is because your dad doesnt hold an FAC and so he cannot have access to the guns or the keys to the cabinet.

2. While under 17 you cannot buy ammuntion or firearms. You could ask another FAC holder to buy them and give them to you as a gift but he would have to have a space for them on his ticket for them, buy it, transfer it to you, he would have to apply for a "one to one" variation on his own ticket so that he could buy another rifle.

It is not that complicated just hassle and third parties rarely put up with being messed around.

3. When you first have your FAC you may well have a supervision condition on your ticket as you are new to rifles, this means that in order to use your rifle, you will need to go out with an approved FAC holder each time, this is inconvenient and normally lasts 6-12 months. This, however, applies to all new FAC holders pretty much.

In reality, you are better off waiting until you are 17 to get your FAC as it just makes things so much easier.

I wholeheartedly disagree with sportingshooter on this one. I have held an FAC since age 15 quite happily. I used to go out shooting rabbits on my own with the rimfire and no issues, it's not difficult, just complicated.

I had experience of firearms from the CCF, and also a rifle club, and that experience is what means you won't need a mentor necessarily, also the shotgun bit will help.

Have a long chat with an FEO about mentoring, it's utter bollocks for rimfire and foxing (i.e. centrefires not meant for deer) - if you've been sensible with shotgun and air rifle and shoot at a club, you will have demonstrated safety.

As for the transferring of firearms, well, my dad got a ticket to help me out, and then kept it too...

First off, I respect your judgement of most things MR L, I just have a few things to clear up.

It is tricky to hold an FAC when under 17, when I say hold I mean to use, in that getting your firearms and ammunition is tricky and time consuming. As you say your father obtained his FAC to help you out, AJWH doesnt have that to rely on.

AJWH does not state whether he has experience other than that with a shotgun, therefore I have to assume he has no experience with a rifle. Whether you agree with mentoring or not, it happens, depending on what police force your in. I dont have it on the rimfire but I do on the centrefire which is for foxing use. Its the luck of the draw.

Once he has his FAC then the matter of going out shooting with his rifle is of little issue, it is getting to that stage which is difficult.

...in a years time :(

what amazes me with this stupid government is that they raised the age to buy an airwapon to 18 but you can be 17 to buy a section 1 firearm or a shotgun! makes alot of sense doesnt it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Yes it makes an awful lot of sense.

To buy an air rifle, you could be anyone , in any state of mind and with nothing to your credit.

To buy either a shotgun or a firearm you will have been through a CRB and PNC check with the police, and if you pass and are interviewed by an FEO to ascertain your character.

The age limit is of no issue, in my opinion a 15 year old that has passed all these checks could go and buy guns and ammunition.

Its common sense really,

I think the reason you have to be 18 to buy a air rifle is because you get young boys in the middle of the streets at all hours shooting the street lamps out (dont think they do it with a shotty because its much louder lol) but thats why i honestly do think people are cracking down on air guns the little yobs are making it difficult for the genuine ones, i will be putting in for my rimmy license when im 17 too :victory:

First up, I know mentoring does go on, I have it for deer and it sorta makes sense there. I meant that I disagree with it otherwise because it doesn't add very much. However, I believe it to be possible to get a ticket without it if you argue your case sufficiently well. That said, all FEOs are different and it's luck of the draw (but it bloody well shouldn't be and something should be done!).

Alex said that he got his shotgun through his dad - that would be my port of call for the firearms too.

Regarding experience, I should have been clearer - I was meaning that it would be a good idea to get some :)

In fact, given the length of time it takes to process the paperwork these days, best bet is probably go join a club and then apply when a full member. It should get you out of the mentoring because you will have learned how to shoot safely.

In a nutshell though, I don't think the process is particularly difficult, in that people won't say No - it's just time consuming because there are more hoops to jump through.

Everyone to there selfs but for me I would prefer to see my lurchers catch one rabbit then to shoot 10. Because most people can shoot a shotgun or rifle and hit something. But not everyone can train a dog to hunt and catch rabbits.

Anyway people thats what I think but you all heard the saying

what ever floats your boat.

And all the best getting a rifle.
