The one 8,528
Getting back to the question it will surely depend on how many jill's you have and how many you breed ,i reckon all the no's are coming from folk that only have a couple of jills ?? Quote Link to post
COMPO 54
I dont like the idea of culling, i very rarely breed and i think that is one of the benefits we have over previous generations snipped hob's and the ability to bring a jill out without producing extra ferrets. I am a Hunter "type" but i like my ferrets, and if i was unable to get out hunting cos of some disability or such i reckon i may keep 1 or 2 for the interest.. I dont feel that show "type" people have ruined ferrets......more ferrets being incirculation has made vets and such learn a bit more about them, rather than when i was a kid and i took a ferret to the vets (i had an appointment with the lurcher and wanted the ferret looking at for some minor problem) the vet never picked her up, he peered at her from about 2 feet away whilst she looked out of the top of her carry box my uncle used to Cull his ferrets, and leave 1 or 2 to take the milk away mainly cos he couldn't do with the idiots coming to buy ferrets every summer and he could give 1 or 2 ferrets to friends or me....the idiots were all working type's!! i dont have a problem selling a ferret to a pet owner..............it much more depends on them being a kind and thoughtful owner than what they are going to use the ferret for or where they are going to keep it inside/outside/in their knicker draw....i really couldn't care as long as they looked after it Obviously i would like to meet other hunters and enjoy chatting about rabbiting but if they aint and want to show it/dress it up or use it as a surrogate child....i really couldn't care i reckon though that the serious show types probably do cull far more drastically than ferreter's. A couple of years ago i was involved with a local ferret club, run by a couple of old blokes and had its fair share of ferreters...it was nice to meet monthly and chat about ferrets/ferreting, use each others snipped hobs, or full hobs if you wanted to breed, a place to pass on surplus kits and a place to find people to care for your ferrets whilst on holiday, buy nets, they had an annual ferreting Competiton which i won one year (£50) plus the 17 rabbits that claimed me first prize!..however they did shows and exhibitions during teh summer and i lost interest in the club cos there started to be more and more emphasis on the shows......not taking away from the working side just adding more and more about summer shows and more and more pet and show owners joining and the amount of ferrets they kept was amazing, literally 20 odd ferrets......sometimes of every sex and colour? There was one bloke who used to irritate the piss out of me and he would turn up with a van full every show....he had a ferret for every class and pairs etc.......... Quote Link to post
Guest bigredbusa
that ferreting competition sounds good compo , maybe we should do one here . you make an intresting point regarding shows and 20 odd ferrets , i think the average ferreter only has what they can work ( stubby do you work all of yours? ) thus keeping the numbers down Quote Link to post
The one 8,528
I like working clubs and i like the idea of a ferreting competion but the only thing is with clubs they tend to hold shows in the summer time to raise funds and im not a showy person . i prefer to use a snipped hob rather than cull and my reasons are simple the few ferrets i breed i can get rid of .the last time i breed a load of kitts and advertised them folk came to see the ferret kitts and every question was how much is this how much is that ans half the time these guys dont show up or use visiting litters of pups ,kitts as a day out so i just refuse to take part in the game Quote Link to post

The ferret competition was on a private shooting estate. the landowner wanted the rabbits controlling but obviously didn't want the pheasants or shoot days disturbing. so he wanted all the warrens ferreting on 1 day! result being he invited the club all to attend on that day, lots were awarded (like match fishing) and you then went and ferreted what ever you could on the piece of land you were appointed, (this was obviously after the last days pheasant shooting usually at the end of feb-beginning of march, and before the laying/rearing season) you had to pack up and be back at the farm yard at 2.30pm and the catch was counted, 1st prize was £50, second £25 and third £10........plus you kept your rabbits (which i sell) so when i won i made quiet a bit of money that day! it is a good way to have a laugh, do a bit of ferreting and see and meet other ferreter's, Quote Link to post
