irish hare v uk saluki crosses.

in my opinion, the irish hare is no push over. all them famouse saluki crosses in the uk, would not catch one here...especially in west of ireland, where the feilds are like gardens and surrounded with forrestry...the irish hare, in its own ground, is harder cought, then the brown hare in uk.....i cought many brown hares in uk, feilds are so big out their....its a sad thing, when a lad here gets led on by all the hype of saluki croses ect in the uk, goes over and gets one for a five figure sum, only to watch it get made a fool of over here, with our small feilds and strong all year irish hares...fact....

you need a very fast clever dog here, with very good strike...

sounds to me like who ever bought the dog was made the fool of not the dog paying a 5 figure sum for a dog that was completely wrong for the land he hunts, a fool & his money are easily parted :icon_redface: ATB Pritch

the irish hare is like the white hare mediocre theres no comparison a mate of mine in cork comes over quite regular to course with me and he also tells me there no comparison the irish lead the world as far as greyhound and race horse breeding goes but the best coursing dogs in the world are in england fact last year i had an average saluki hybryd bitch here that could stop a few i gave it to him to take back to ireland when he took it out back there it was stopping em left right and centre the irish hare is sharp we know but it dont compare with the brown hare for speed agility or stamina when was the last time an irish dog won the forley or anything similar over here theres been enough of them try but never any success

Plenty of up and at em saluki types not all box their hares a lot of the lads i go out with are trying to breed the faster types but keeping the wind thats needed for big land.

With the way its going now you want a dog thats quick on its hare saves being on the land to long especially slipping out of the motor.

SPOT ON..

Maybe so, but they aint made for the job, make it look far to hard a job. Like you say they are tryin to breed them! have seen lots try down here and they have all failed. Just more dogs for the blue cross. You cant have the best of both worlds. A sprinter is a sprinter!! A long distance runner is a long distance runner, simple. Saluk owners ,get over it.. No offence

just wanted to ad that not all of us here in england have big open fields to run our dogs in .where i am there mostly tight as feck with the odd exception which is why i went with a beddy whippet x grey ,like most of you have said horses 4 courses.never had the pleasure of the mighty irish hare :whistling: so cant comment on them, :victory:

over the years ive caught blue hares irish hares and your normal brown hares there some places localy thye are not for catching and some places with a good dog you will catch, what a load of dribble the irish hare is the best, up to date the hardest hare is the new mexico black tailed jack rabbit very hard and even on big land would lead a meduim paced dog away in asprint they are fast clever and can hang on and the type of prairie you cant see them they get up woosh they are flat out as they are used to predators like coyotes eagles etc , the brown hare would be second to a jack rabbit and the irish hare like the blue hare third ,

if you put the irish hare on big land over here it would get caught a lot quicker than a brown hare.

exactly what i was thinking....the irish hare would have no chance put in our big fields or fenn over here

but in the small fields you need a quick dog and can box a hare and not just chase and strike

seems a few on here, have not coursed the Irish hare. :hmm:

let me put one thing straight.

the irish hare, is far stronger then the blue mountain scottish hare.

the scottis hare, runs like a rabbit and sometimes is easier cought then a rabbit, fact.

i would love to see these top bred uk dogs, come over here and take 5 out a 5 irish hares in rough ground.

but thats like saying the same about the dogs u irish run coming over here on the fen....you get a certain dog for the ground you run....but some dogs can run in all sorts of ground

IMO mate you are wrong ive got a saluki x and he can and has killed hare in big land were he needs to be a long distance runner as you said and in small fields were he has to be a sprinter and my dog is not the only saluki x that can do this

So have i, but no way would i have one for that reason. They make hard work of it in comparison to alot of other dogs, very mediocre. Not saying they cant, they can but not very well. :notworthy:

Hare, the reason why the scottish blue hare runs like shit is because of the terrain, they live mostly in thick heather up here. The Irish hare is just a sub species of the mountain hare, thats why some of them go white in winter in the colder and higher parts of the emerald isle. Put a mountain hare on flatter pasture and they will run a bit faster than when theyre on heather, but they are still nowhere near being in the same league as a brown hare. And no, I have never run irish hares but Ive ran plenty of the other 2 and most irish lads (well the ones I have spoken to about them) will tell you honestly that the irish hare is midway between the 2 when it comes to athletic abilities :victory:
