Does anyone know of any Great Danes willing to do a bit of hunting?

Would they be game enough to take on a fox, badger, boar?

What about tackling deer?

What about as guard dogs? Are they still of any use?

Also would Great Dane add much to a lurcher in its breeding?

I have read that 100 years ago they were a popular cross in lurchers and keepers dogs. They were called 'German Boarhounds' back then.

Are they still worked in any countries?

the first dog i saw take a roe was a danexwolf hound tbh 2 deer were runing up and down a fence line and the big dog peged one but if it was out in the open it would of bin to slow to catch out . but is did put a quick end to the job . 20odd year ago.

It would be good for eating you out of house and home but then that would probably only be for about 8 years.

:clapper::clapper: i have a great dane x english mastiff and she can put away some amount of grub. she's a great guard dog and likes sniffing around bushes but i don't think it would add anything to a lurcher apart from bigger food bills. bigger shite's and more dribble

I have seen a few pet Great Danes but never hunting. The physical aspect of the dog means it would require carefull rearing and by the time it matures at 4 and dies at 7 you would have wished you had bought something else. As for guarding, if they were any good there would be more of them doing it.

I've known many a Dane over the years, through the vets I've worked for. I personally can't see how they'd add much to a lurcher. What they are today (versus what they must've been 100 years ago, say) is nowt more than really big, cumbersome drooling couch potatoes. Watch one loping around in a field - they just don't have much to offer. FJager is right, they wouldn't add much more than size, which would be better obtained through other breeds imo.

But saying that, it would be really nice to see a Dane that was healthy, athletic and strong. But years and years of fad breeding have pretty much taken that out of them I think.
