dogs-n-natives 1,182
No, you want a cartridge of over 36g and with shot size no smaller than No 1. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
If I were to be specific then I would say , 36g+ of either AAA or BB through a 3/4 Choke. Regards SS Quote Link to post

Guest JohnGalway
You want BB sized shot, 36gram weight is good for the job 6's are just too light since you're going out especially looking for foxy. Quote Link to post

I would tend to agree with John here, 6 are definately too light. BB would be my first choice and probably with 1/2 choke, AAA are a little big in my opinion for fox, but all situations are a bit different. My first choice in 90%+ situations would be a rifle, but I do not deny that Charlie has stuck his head up close in front of me and run off quickly several times; if I had the shotgun in my hand and not the rifle he would not have made it! dwighet 1
i use 46gm 3inch bb magnums..they have a nice bit of punch in them.. If your shotty is chambered for 3 inch cartridges give them a go...They get the job done... Quote Link to post
ferreterwithnets 0
thanks i will take my camara and take a pic if i get it Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
thanks i will take my camara and take a pic if i get it If you shoot a fox CLOSE with 36g AAA there will not be much left to take a picture of, from memory I think you are talking something like 1600ft lb of energy in one of these, that makes a mess close! Be okay if charlie is a little further away as the pattern will mean you will only hit him with a "few" lumps! Quote Link to post
Guest JohnGalway
Just a bit more kick..Keep your shoulder into it and you will be fine... I've shot 64gram BB's, mind you it was through my semi auto. I've always thought the best foxing team is two lads, both have lights, one carrys a centrefire rifle and one a shotgun Just happens to be the way myself and John do it But you're equally well prepared for the far out fox sitting on a hillock thinking he's safe or the close in in cover fox. Or, like the last time we were out the fox that races into the call through difficult ground not affording the rifle a shot, so the shotgun nailed her. I have AAA shells, I've not tried them on fox yet. I've two new chokes coming for my shotgun, I'll pattern them when I get the chokes and see if they're worth trying. I do suppose it depends on if your shotgun likes them and will pattern them well, or not. I think BB's are the best all rounder though, plenty of pellets and good killing power within reasonable range, it's still not a rifle Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
i like the 43g noughts in 3" mag, gets the job done, but as said anything above the 36g in BB's if shooting 2 3/4" will get the job done. GOOD LUCK. Quote Link to post
