Right then, variation to be sorted tomorrow, so which HMR would you guys recommend?

Quick butcher's on guntrader reveals:

Sako Quad, either synthetic (wallet prefers this) or varmint/wood (heart prefers this)

Moving on,

Ruger 77/17

Marlin 917

CZ

Recommendations, and why?

BTW I don't like the Anschutz because while they are nice rifles IMHO they aren't worth the money - if I spent that kind of money it will be a Sako Quad Varmint.

Cheers muchly all :)

Hi,

I have the synthetic quad and can recommend it highly. It is a cracking rifle and I have had no problems at all with it. Just hours of sport and trouble free 200 yard plus accuracy! A pic of mine is shown below.

Get one and I am certain you won't be disappointed - I prefer mine to my Anschutz.

Cheers,

Snelly

Sako Quad for me. Mine is .22lr but I've shot one in HMR plenty of times  Not varmint models though, just synthetic with the lighter barrels. The stock can be a wee bit short depending on your build but you can get butt stock spacers

i would haveto say the CZ 452 american in hmr, for one they are cheap reliable and very accurate, when conditions are right i can shoot a 5 shoot group into a 1/4 inch at 100 yards. with thiss little weapon, down side trigger is not the best on purchase but for a few pounds it can be transformed.

Snelly thats a nice setup mate i just don't like the FT style wheel, but it looks the business, model, mag and price. please. :notworthy:

Got a CZ Varmint HMR full length barrel & after-market thumbhole stock & its superb for the money. Have the .22 in American 16" too & there's a big difference in the weight. If weight isn't an issue the Varmint gives more confidence. Agree about the trigger though, my .22's had the Brookes conversion & it makes a hell of a difference.

Overall I can't see that spending so much more on other makes can improve performance that much.

If the sako wood varmint is as nice as the finnfire varmint .22 used to be, then that's what I would go for. I think you have to shoulder as many as poss to get an idea. My cz trigger is still not great even with a kit, though it will group 1/2" at 100yds.

The thing is, I've had a go on one of the .22 Anschutz carbines, I didn't rate the trigger as good as my Sako 22-250, hence the desire for a Quad - get that on a rimfire...

which trigger did it have mate the two stage or single stage ?

the single stage unit is better the the two stage one i think

It is a Sako Quad in .17HMR with SAK moderator. The scope is a Nite Eater 6-24 x 50 with illuminated mil dot. It is a nice scope and was cheap too. The reason I have the sidewheel on is because I use this for long range sniping on rabbits at ranges up to 220 yards. I shoot it off the bonnet of my truck and the wheel is helpful when rangefinding and focusing quickly.

Snelly.

PS - the Annie is definitely worth the money in my view and both single and two stage triggers are excellent. I have tried CZ's and agree that they are an excellent tool but they are not for me as the finish is a bit rough and ready. They shoot very well of course, it's just that I believe the maxim "buy cheap, buy twice" to be true and I always try and get the best possible when buying toys! If I bought a CZ (and I nearly did) I think I would always be wondering if I would have been better of with an Anschutz. Each to their own of course.......

Another vote for the CZ.

I have the Varmint 16" barrel with an ASE Utra Mod on it. If the conditions are right, 1/2" groups are easily achievable as well as smaller ones. The finish and wood on mine is superb for a CZ.

I have fired the Quad in .22LR and the Ruger 77/17 but I cannot find any discernible difference in accuracy or, if you look at a few guns, the finish.

Here is mine when I first had it with no mod or Bi-pod.

Thanks for all the info guys, I went with a Sako Quad synthetic, and am chuffed with it as a rifle. Was in a hurry so didn't work on the price, £475 which is £50 more than the Sportsman but it would have cost me £50 in fuel so what the heck?!

I have put my Hornet moderator (DM80) on there and it's very quiet, and with that and the bipod the balance and weight are pretty good. Just need a decent scope now but that will have to wait a while.
