Mr_Logic 5
Hi all, just wondering how quiet it is possible to make a 223, with the right moderator? I have a Predator8 on the front of mine right now, and while it's quiet enough that I don't need muffs on, it's not very quiet in the grand scheme of things. One of my permissions consists of two people's lawns, one of whom is in the lucky position of having a 150-yard lawn. Of course, there's limited cover so it's too far for a 22LR really. I have used my Hornet and 223 there. 223 works well but it's too loud, Hornet's rubbish and I am selling it (head shot on bunny = paralysed bunny, very much alive - and body shots mostly = runners too). So, is it possible to really hush up the 223? Obviously I won't get rid of the crack, but Hornet is supersonic too and it's orders of magnitude quieter. The other option is a 17HMR, but the other half's not happy with that idea because I want a Quad (because really I want 22 Magnum, try finding one of those with a screwcut barrel!!) and they are extremely not cheap. You will not 'sliencer' completly any type of firearm esp. if the bullet is travaling supersonic speed, but you can reduce the sound it makes by 50%. a sound mod on a .177 pistol will sound like a soft thud, .22lr will sound like you are banging something. But a .223 will prob sound like gunshot but the sound will not travel as far, thus will not piss off a whole town. If you go on utube you can view people shooting .223's with a sound mod. have look Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
I would say my modded .223 (t8) sounds probably twice as loud as the modded (pes) hmr. A lot depends on the reflected noise off trees and fences.I don't know of any freely available factory subs for a .223 or even if they would work with the twist rate and home downloading would be one for experts only I fear, due to safety probs. tonetone 0
hi was out with a couple of ma shooting buddies not that long ago firing at a target. 1 has a 223 remington without a silencer and the other has a tikka 223 with a great big moderator on it. when i was standing next to them there was hardly any difference in the noise they were both unbeliveably loud. i was a bit dissapointed because i had just ordered a new cz 223 and got the barrel screw cut, waste of 70 quid i recon. I definately wont be putting a moderator on mine. since then i have got my cz223 and if i am shooting next to a bank of earth or a hedge etc ma ears a ringing. cheers tone Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I shoot my .222 and even though a different calibre, it does make a difference with a mod on it (T8). I have shot it in both states and it makes a discernible difference. Would a Mod with more baffles be of any use, i.e. instead of an 8 perhaps a 12 like the Predator. Just a Thought SS Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
A T8 Reflex on a .223 makes a hell of a difference noise wise and makes the rifle sweeter to use taking out all the muzzle boom. Moderated rifles on u tube give an indication, but often the microphones used cannot take the intense noise pulse and do not give a true reproduction. tonetone 0
interesting about reducing the muzzel boom, that would be good. maybe my mates moderator is just a bit cheap and nasty. i suppose if the shooting experience is made sweeter then a good moderator might be worth thinking about. cheers tone Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Re load your own subsonic, about 150g HP, good moderator (or even a predator 8 ) and it will sound quiet as a mouse! You could even try re-using those Wolf Steeel cases Failing that, throw stones, use a catapault, slingshot or bow and arrow (or just top that old girl who puts notes on the windscreen ) I'll get my coat!! Mr_Logic 5
Hmm!!! Well, I've given up on that slant, going with HMR. That said, I would still like my 223 to be a bit quieter, interesting to try other moderators but since it's 5/8" threaded I think I will leave it as is! Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
Mines 5/8" on a T8. Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
Mines 5/8" on a T8. I know they do exist, in fact I'm sure 5/8 is pretty common on heavy barrel rifles, but I'm the only person I know with a 223 heavy barrel rifle so no opportunity to test Quote Link to post
